Sorry to ask a dumb question but do they fit small. I have some european boots right now that are 39 and fit me great. I wear a 8.5. every conversion chart I look at shows that a 40 fits a US size 9.

Good question.
Yes they run small.

I bought these boots for Nancy. She is a size 9 and I saw the same charts as you figuring a size 40 Euro would be just right.
These boots are too small for Nancy.

I am currently out of the country. When I get home on Sunday I will take a photo of the boots with a ruler that you can see the size and compare to yours.
