Sidestand Switch Bypass

Hi guys,

My sidestand switch is intermittently preventing the bike from starting (error code 19). A warranty replacement switch is on order but will take a week or so to show up. Anyone know how to bypass the switch in the interim? I have lubricated the switch with no luck. PS: I totally suck at electrical stuff, so the "bypass for dummies" version would be very helpful! :D

I haven't looked at where this particular one connects/ disconnects, but usually, if you connect the wires that the sidestand switch plugs into on the wiring harness side , that creates a bypass.

I've bypassed many side stand switches (i hate them), find the connecter-un plug it, make a small jumper wire (since yours is temp) and on the harness side simple connect the jumper wire and problem solved.
Now if it was a permeant fix just unbolt/remove the switch and cut the wire north of the switch and solder together and call it done..

Guys, that switch is there for a real reason....I personally watched as a buddy on a 916 was damn near killed when he made the first left turn after a lunch stop when his down sidestand hit the ground as he leaned into the turn. Seems he used the bike often for track days and removed the side stand for cornering clearance. He had the switch jumpered after he replaced the stand for road use....

Agreed that it is there for your safety. But it is located in a very vulnerable place for damage and wear. So it can be faulty and leave you stranded.

I haven't disabled mine. But I would in a second if it was stranding me.

A friend totaled his VTR1000 in the first corner he took after riding off with the side stand down. ::26::

It's value from a safety perspective is unquestionable, the OP was looking for a short term solution to unavailable parts. With no safety switch one must be very aware of the side stand whenever riding. You are right in that it can be a fatal mistake to ride off with it down. ::008::

I am a fan of bypassing the switch if you ride hard off road. It is very unsafe to be riding over rough terrain and have the engine stall due to the side stand drooping off the switch causing a catastrophic crash. Now if you ride mainly tarmac and rarely ride off road then definitely leave it in place. YMMV

I jumpered the switch on my KLR because the sidestand would bounce while offroad and cut the engine off and on. I did hit the down sidestand twice and was lucky on the third time when a rider pointed at it just before we went into a 60 mph left turn.

For my Tenere I also use my sidestand to cut the engine off when parking.

@Sail - What Scott posted. It's just a simple circuit. Closed - meaning the wires connected, it runs. Open, the wires not connected, it doesn't. If you need to deal with it, jump the wires together and you're golden. Do correct it when you get the new switch, but likely your habits are ingrained pretty well at this point and it's not a huge deal.

A simple paper clip can bridge the wires in a pinch.

Ordinarily I would leave the switch intact, but since it's intermittently malfunctioning my primary concern is being able to get home (and ultimately to the dealer for warranty replacement). I talked to the dealer, and their suggestion was to leave everything be (I checked connections last night) and if I have a problem, just cut the wires at the switch and twist them together. Of course, this assumes that the problem isn't somewhere in the wiring harness for the switch itself. :D

The plunger in the switch is well lubricated and not sticking.

On a side note, these switches are not in stock at any Yamaha warehouse in the US - it is a direct ship from Japan, and is expected to take 2-3 weeks to show up.

No need to cut any wires. As many have said just unplug the switch from the harness and insert a jumper. Once you unplug it you will see how easy it is. I am not a fan of hacking wires unless I am stranded and its a last resort. YMMV

I have not looked into it but maybe if you get it running just leave the side stand up and use the center stand instead?
