Has it been confirmed that a Battery Tender will work with these? I thought at some point it was questionable....

On a side note, I did see these at the IMS in Chicago. Felt really crazy when you pick it up, just so light! I can see going this route when I need to eventually replace the OEM.....

The Shorai web site states that the Battery Tender works just fine with these. I have one on my KTM that I use the Batter Tender Plus on without issue.

Most battery maintainers are safe if they do not have a desulfate mode. I'm pretty sure the Yusa maintainer has one. At least the one I have does, and I know the Battery Tender junior does not.

I am running this brand on my Ducati. Great battery! I no longer have to keep the Duc on a tender as often as I used to.

I have a Shorai in my Super Tenere and so far it has been great. I have heard that they can have issues with cold starts in cold weather. I live in a tropical climate here on east coast of Australia and we are into the cold months now and for the next few, but we don't get that cold compared to others on this forum. Don't even get frost on the ground here. So far no problems with cold starts.
However, I recently saw a U Tube video, supposedly made by Shorai, in which the Shorai representative stated that these batteries are not as good as the genuine OEM battery at running lots of accessories, heated gear and lights. He actually said lead acid batteries do that better than anything else and Shorai batteries are really developed for racing environment. In other words, start, charge, start, charge and high revs too. For low revs like touring in overdrive at near the speed limit and using a lot of current, not so good compared to lead acid.
Has anyone had any experience with running lots of accessories whilst touring with these batteries who could offer feedback?

I have not heard about the lead batteries being better. I know a person with the Shorai in his Wing and it is doing great.
When it is cold out, try turning on your lights or plugging in a piece of heated gear first for a few minutes. This should warm the battery up and the bike will start just fine.

I have heard these work fine. A friend was involved with testing and deployment for a large fleet of vehicles. They have been deployed a couple of years now with excellent results.

What is different is that in terms of amp-hours they don't have a lot of storage. So, if the alternator or generator are running you are fine to run whatever accessories you've got. Turning the bike off and running a cpap from it overnight, as I do on my truck battery, would not work. This is a difference between cold cranking amps (peak current to crank your motor) and electrical storage (amp-hours). The FeLiPO4 chemistry achieves the CCA's needed without the huge storage of a comparable lead-acid battery.

They should start fine down to about freezing. After that if you pre-warm them for a few minutes by turning on some lights or heated gear, they will warm internally and be fine for cranking.

As with everything in life there are trade-offs. If you need huge amounts of electrical energy storage (amp hours) then lead-acid or Li-Ion are the chemistries of choice (although Li-ion is not so good for cars for other reasons). For motor vehicle operations what is needed is peak current for starting, and huge amounts of storage are superfluous and come at either a weight (lead-acid) or price (Li-Ion) disadvantage. FeLiPO4 achieves longer battery life and significant weight reduction at a very cost-effective price point to create an overall excellent value.

OK thanks Twisties. Great explanation. I understand now. I must say I've had no problems at all either. Infact I've actually wired up a duel battery set up in my Tenere using a voltage sesitive relay that automatically measures current in both batteries and automatically switches from one battery to the other and keeps both charged up. I have one battery for starting and running the bike, and the other for all accessories. This way I've always got a charged battery for starting. So far it's working fine.

So as not to hijack the thread, can you PM me the details of your voltage-sensitive relay? Thanks!
