How long do you expect to be riding in Europe? Where do you expect to ride? These are a key factors in this decision....

I've read in a few magazines and forums that the duration of the stay will be the tipping point as to whether to transport yer own or hire when you get there. Most people seem to talk about a 3/4 week period not being financially viable for transport but to hire, any longer and it makes sense to transport your favorite toy. How long are you planning on being in Europe ?

Where are you shipping from? Also, are you just staying in Germany or will you go to other countries as well?

There is another route, buy and sell. I can get ahold of a gent's info in Ireland that has made a side biz of tracking down, buying, storing, and re-selling. It can work out cheaper than renting, and usually a whole bunch cheaper than importing your own. Trevor, DCstrom, found out a lot more than he wanted to know about transporting/importing a bike internationally.

I rent overseas somewhat regularly and it is easy in Europe. Most motorcycle dealers rent and will have somebody who can speak English with you. The other fun aspect is that you can usually rent bikes that we don't have in the US. I got on a Tenere and the original Vstrom before they came to the US.
