I've had this happen a time or 2 but today it really bothered me.

As other posters reported, I too had problems quickly down shifting with the clutch pulled. I was having trouble getting the bike in 1st and making some left turns from stops even had me worried I might stall trying to cross lanes of on coming traffic. Bad thing!

Got home OK and jumped on here to look for the fix. Took the pivot bolt off, cleaned it and the linkage it fit into, greased it up good with some marine grade bearing grease. Works like butter again!

Love this forum!

Mine seemed to be getting sluggish again so instead of spray oil, I took it apart. For those not totally understanding the subject, here's a photo:

The grit in there wasn't going to easily wash away with some WD-40 or other oil. It really needs to come apart and get cleaned. For those about to do this, watch carefully not to lose one of the 3 washers and get them back where they belong. A thin one sticks to the back side of the shifter and is easy to miss.

Clearly there is a grease groove that would benefit from a zirk fitting. At this point, I just packed it with a good marine grease that is thick and anti-corrosive (mine was starting to) and put it back together with new blue LockTite, like the factory did.

Works great again.
Thanks so much for picture make it very easy for me to understand everything...newbiee...

A few of us have Zerk fittings on our shifters and it makes it easy to add a bit of grease.

I just did the shifter and the brake pedal. The shifter bolt was pretty dirty and cleaning it and greasing it made it a lot more smooth.

A word to the wise on the brake lever bolt... it is held on (on the back) by a cotter pin that passes through a cross shaped hole in the bolt. If you don't know about that - and I didn't - you'll snap off the very end of the bolt as you unbolt it and the cotter pin applies tension to the last 2mm of the bolt. The bolt is still usable although there is risk of it backing out without the cotter pin to secure it.

My bike just clicked over 6000 miles...
I pulled the shift lever bolt to check for grease, mine was bone dry- bone dry like someone missed putting grease on it!! No dirt, no grease residue, no nothing- bone dry/factory new clean.
Mine wasn't bad to shift but it wasn't smooth either.. Just put a good amount of marine/water proof grease on it, wow what a night and day difference!

Wish I didn't wait 6 months to check this, should have done it the day I brought her home.

You are correct. Has anyone started a thread for 'New Tenere? Things To Check Before You Ride'.

Thank you for this informative thread! My bike has been running very well about 5000miles but this gear problem came out like 500miles ago. Warranty is still on so I think I'll take my bike to a local dealer with this issue. If they have no time to do it asap then I'll clean and lube the pivot myself. Such a small thing to do but very annoying symptoms to live with ::010::

Common problem. Either: Spray a little lube on the bushing or remove the shifter, clean and lube, reinstall.
