Shift Lever Sticking- will not down shift.

This last weekend during a prolonged ride my shift lever began to stick. At one point I was unable to down shift at all. I finally found that if I gently nudged the lever back up I could then down shift but it was necessary to do that for each shift. Challenging in traffic in town. I was thinking I might have something internal wrong in the transmission but I decided to look at it on a stop at my daughter's house and see if I could fix it before heading home. What I found was that the shift lever was sticking and would not automatically pop back up after being pushed down.

I removed the bolt at the pivot with a 6mm Allen wrench. The shift lever pivots on this special bolt but there is no way to lubricate it without removing it. I choose a silicon grease to lightly coat the bolt and re installed it with the washers in the same order. Problem fixed, yeah! I also did the same with my wife's S10. Thought others might find this useful.

Clean it. Take it off wipe it clean, grease it. Seen they all do it from time to time

Common issue, you'll find many posts exactly like yours Jeff. First time my shift lever comes off I will tap threads and install a grease zerk. Every oil change just hit it with a small pump of marine grease to keep shifting smooth.

At the same time and as a wider object lesson, I just did a search with the words "shift lever" and quit counting when seeing this has been "found" as if it were a new thing to initiate 13 separate threads. As the Tenere has been in service for 6 model years now (in 2010 outside of the US), my message is that the few service issues we have are really well known. This thread is a great example of not needing to spend your time in starting an all new thread, and to . . .


Please please please use the search function.


While there isn't necessarily a problem in starting the new thread, some of the old threads have great contributions. The problem is that multiple threads make it less likely that somebody will see (or search to successfully find) some of those contributions, such as:
How easy it is to lose the thin washer hidden on the back.
The order of parts going back on so the belleville works correctly,
How to install a zirc fitting,
Torque values,
etc.


As the new mod on the block, I'm letting this one go, but don't be surprised if threads get merged at some point.

I agree that if somebody wants to create a thread for a sticky, it would be a good thing.


What I would want to see is that the first post lay out the whole process, including what I mentioned in my previous post, in order. This specific thread doesn't have that, so go for it, assemble the pieces by quoting from this and the other threads in a new thread, and we'll let this one slide away like all those previous threads.

You will also note that in the owners manual it says to do this as part of periodic MTC. I did my 4K early this weekend but didnt have the grease for it so it will have to wait till... well probably actual 4K.

Preventative MTC beats reactive repair. IMHO, YMMV etc.

Thanks for the comments guys. Yes, I should of used the search function. When I had the problem I didn't have computer access and just fixed it. I do know others have appreciated my photos of my repairs on other sites even when it was a documented repair in the manual as the color photos can be clearer and some people are visual learners. Please merge this thread with the others to create one if you wish, I have no problem with that.

By the way my bike just rolled over 4500 miles, which oil do you think I should use? ::002::

Funny , I just did this service on my S10 a couple of days ago. Yamaha really uses some strong loc-tite on those threads. I didn't put any on the threads when I re-installed it.

Good job on the write up and photos. I actually get sick of the people who keep saying use the search function. So what if we duplicate posts. It is all about communication. My last bike was a vt1100 shadow sabre. Forum had been going for years. A search could resolve everything but it was good to discuss topics with new owners and those who didn't want to comment didn't have to. Tolerance is bliss.

As I noted, there are arguments both ways.

Which is why this is a great topic for a sticky as Helios suggests, and why I left the thread.
