Service intervals

As a new owner (bike isn't in my hands yet, nor is the owner's manual) I'm curious about the service interval. I usually do all of my own service- I was a master tech for 10 years and don't like anyone else touching my vehicles except for required recalls and warranty work. I asked the dealer about the first service (600 mile) and he rattled off a bunch of stuff off his head such as a TB sync and other semi-involved items. Once I got home I looked online and the only owner's manual I could find is a 2010 European model, but I'm assuming the mechanical stuff would be the same. It shows the 600 mile service as changing oil, filter, and final drive fluid; and checking fasteners. We all know the dealer won't be doing anything except an oil & FD fluid change (worked enough dealers to have seen that).

Any reason not to just do the fluid change myself? It's an hour ride each way to the dealer, they told me up to a 3 hour wait, and I have other things I need to get done on the bike in those 5 hours on a Saturday; not to mention the roughly $200 for what sounds like an oil change. Has anyone ran into problems with a dealer balking at doing your own services?

No problem, do it yourself. You might want to save receipts for oil, etc, just in case there is a problem, but that is rare

Thanks. The only reason I let them schedule the service was the mention of TB sync, but since it wasn't in the manual I know they won't be doing one. I'll probably just do it myself when the time comes. I did my ST1300 for the past 100k miles, I think I can handle the Tenere.

A Tenere throttle body sync is very easy, once you've done it once. I think I did my TBS at 4000 miles the first time. It was just a tiny bit off.

Read up a little on spoke maintenance for these bikes. It's super important to check for loose spokes at the 600 mile service. Especially the rear wheel. They can need tightening early on as they bed in.
