I am coming off of a R1200GS. Saying that I just purchased the S10 on Saturday and only have 230 miles on my belt there are a few things I can say so far. I believe that the GS handles the twisities a little better than the S10 but that could be from lack of seat time on the S10. I feel that the S10 is better balanced than the GS making slow maneuvering a cinch. The suspension is firmer with better damping without being harsh. The narrow engine makes for splitting lanes a less hair raising adventure. The clincher for me was the fear of my final drive going out and the cost of my ABS module that went out. BMW wanted $2900.00 just for the module not including the labor to replace it. I said, "You know what, I don't really need ABS." and just kept riding it. I'm glad that I purchased the S10 so far and I'm not worried in the back of my mind of how much is it going to cost when it breaks, because with BMW it was when it brakes not if it breaks.

IIRC, the same folks that make BMW's GS cases make Yamaha's accessory side cases and top boxes... I ***think*** the outfit is SHAD, IIRC, out of Spain.

Just FYI...

It is not who makes them, but how they are designed. The BMW stuff is a joy to use, the locks and latches work very nicely for a start, and they have a load more room.

Perhaps the grip heaters are also made by the same people, but on my GS both heated grips worked very well, at £300 I am a bit dissapointed the Yamaha ones look like a cheap third party add-on and ine grip is far warmer than the other.

The clocks may also be produced in the same factory, but BMW decided to have buttons on the bars in easy reach, as opposed to needing to lean forward to press buttons.

But I would rather put up with the Yamaha ergonomics than be sat broken down at the roadside marvelling at the switchgear layout ::008::

I don't know about the heated grips... I had 'em on my BMW but rarely used them, and don't have 'em on my Yamaha.

But I can comment on BMW system cases!!! Maybe it was just me, but I could never say the ones on my R1150R were "a joy to use"... Not even in the abstract!!! Stiff latches, easily damaged and then left unusable (don't ask me how I know...). Cases having to be locked to remove 'em. Poor sealing allowing water to leak in, even after replacing the o-rings more than once. Having to check and double-check to make sure they're fully mounted and locked down, otherwise they pop off and go skidding down the road (didn't happen to me, but happened to two different riding buddies).

I could go on, but you get the idea... To me the Yamaha cases are actually a vast improvement over the Beemer system cases I've used. :D

They stopped wasting money on building reliable drive trains and spent it on better luggage with the 1200's ::008::

I was going to add my BMW story to this thread, but RASHER said everything I have to say. My BMW GS experience was almost exactly the same ::008::
