Just got burned on a fender deal. New member..no previous posts used a forum member name with an personal email. Requested payment by Paypal Friends and Family, which was paid, then he tried to fleece me for another $50 which I declined. No word since, no refund and the person who messaged me....yep...gone

Anyway...again a warning I should have headed:

1. New member beware
2. NEVER send money by Friends and Family (unless they truly are)

I've attached the conversation just as FYI

richarddacat definitely was a member, I can recall having some conversations with him on various threads. He hasn't been on here since June 2022.

I had a similar experience with a member on Adventure Rider but by a guy that had hundreds of posts. Had a posting with a price shipped in the lower 48 so I bought the tail rack from him.
I didn’t hear anything from him for about a week so I contacted him and he wanted me to come up with more money to cover the shipping. I only live 80 miles from him.
I was fortunate that I did all my conversions through AR and sent my issue to the moderators, they contacted him and get it cleared up for me.
Some people’s kids.

I hope the ADV Rider mods banned that member.

The only really acceptable solution for the problem you encountered would have been "hey man, I messed up and miscalculated the shipping costs. If you no longer want the item because of the added cost, I'll gladly refund your money". Or eat the added cost and use it as an inspiration to learn how to better calculate shipping charges. It certainly shouldn't have been ""I'm holding your item and your payment hostage until you give me more money". It shouldn't take the intervention of the mods in order to force the guy to, you know, fulfill his end of the bargain.

In Dante's Inferno, the 7th Circle of Hell is for thieves, and there they are punished by being bitten by snakes, and turned to ash, then be regenerated back into their bodies to be bitten again and again. Some are turned into snakes, so they can prey on the other thieves. Every time I read about an internet scammer, or a Nigerian Prince, or a take-the-money-and-run contractor, or Sam Bankman-Fried, I think that Dante Alighieri was on the right track.

I'm pretty sure he didn't leave until more recently. I "think" I remember his birthday being posted within the last year. (but it could have been longer) I do remember thinking that I hadn't seen anything from him in a while.

The last time he was seen on the forum was June 8, 2022. That's according to his profile.

Yes, but "last seen" and birthdays are separate. As long as he was still a member his birthday would show up. There's a few past members that their profile is still present, but they're not members anymore. The best that I can tell, if a member doesn't post in a year, they get removed.
Willing to bet that Robert Paul and richarddacat are one and the same.
Could be, but I thought Richard was a member for quite a while and posted like everybody else.

The mods can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain that the "date last seen" category on your profile is the date you last logged into your account under your profile name. I didn't say he wasn't a member any more, only that he last logged on to the site on June 8th, 2022. I don't know how he could have interacted with anyone on the forum since June 8, if June 8 was the last time he actually logged in. His most recent post on the site, at least according to a member search of his name, is June 7, 2022.

Again, the mods could probably answer the question as to whether or not someone remains a member if they are inactive for a year. I suspect they do remain a member, but I don't know the answer. I don't know anything about the birthday announcements; the mods would have to answer that one too. But again, I suspect that, as long as you're a member and your membership hasn't been terminated, those birthday announcements are probably automated, and don't require a member's continued and up to date participation on the forum in order for them to appear.

I agree with everything you said. You have a more in-depth search ability. 'Cuz when I search his name, nothing comes up at all. I don't have the ability to search past members.

New member, no previous posts, family and friends.........You broke all the rules.

Paypal "goods and services" only and always pay Paypal with a credit card. If you use any funds you have in a PP account you don't have any leverage with them. If you use a credit card, they know you have the ability to do a chargeback and then you have all the leverage. If the seller cries about the PP fee offer to add 3% to cover the fees. If that doesn't suit them, run like hell. They can't scam you if you don't let them.
