Hello everybody. I just sold my dl1000 vstrom and I am about to get S10. I never had chance to ride S10 and I am courious how is it comparing to Vstrom 1000. It weight much more, so is it lazy or agressive on the road (agressive for that kind of bike). How is the bike overall. There is no too many owners and it is first generation in the US, so that kind of make me unconfortable buying it.

I put 60,000 miles on a 1000 V-Strom and thought it was a really good motorcycle. The Tenere is everything the V-Strom was and then some. Similar ergos, better fuel mileage and fuel range. Horsepower is similar but the power delivery is a little different, this is my first parallel twin. I reallty really like my Tenere, it tours well and it handles much lighter than the advertised weight, I swear it feels 100 lbs lighter. I ride mildly aggressive and like the way it handles the curves.

Hi there and ::004::

I own a DL1K and here are my observations after jumping off the 1K onto an S10 (Oz spec) and back to the DL.

S10 = DL1K + 40% better on average except...

Steering response. It is slower. It takes a bit more effort to change directions BUT off road you don't unexpectedly change directions as easily.
So it's a plus but in the dirt more than the tarmac. The S10 doesn't want to fall into corners so none of that pushing on the bars in slow speed turns either. Once in a corner, it just sits nice and stable and is not fussed by bumps etc.

Can be sped up if you find yourself doing twisties but nothing else. If that is you why buy this bike?

Weight. Feels more like -20% for some reason when you are moving. A bit like you would expect a DL800 would feel. Although I have read Wee owners saying it doesn't feel any heavier on the move.

Engine, You are wondering why you keep trying to run up the backside of other bikes. The s10 is faster from 20km/h-100km/h then it feels until you go "WTF! officer I was just taking it easy". Smoother than a DL1K. Multiple reports of the same thing.

Engine is not as toppy as the DL1K, but more flexible.

The s10 is just a very refined bike.

Jumping back on the DL1K after the S10. --> Tractor that wants to fall over at low speed. (They would call it character if it was a Euro bike I suppose)

From what I have read...
It is "boring" until you push it a bit. Surprises you a bit every day. Gets better with age and experience.
2% of peoples arms go to sleep. We are still trying to figure that one out.
It is a nuclear powered dirt bike, but not an MX bike.
It can't keep up with KTM's off road. The bike needs a KTM mode for the next release.

Cheers
Graham

I sold a DL1000 and bought an S10 to replace it. The Suzuki is a great bike allthough I wanted more features plus the Japanese reliability and the S10 was it for me. So now you have a reliable bike as a base line, some of the pro's of the Yamaha that you will notice right off is that the forks don't flex. This can be a problem with the V-Strom especially off road. Shifting is smoother - I had the Mike's spacers on the DL1000 which helped but the S10 is still smoother. The gearing is better (a larger rear sproket on the V-stom is close though). Power is smoother with the S10, maybe not quite the pull on top but close. S10 feels lighter for some reason. More ground clearance and shaft drive is nice with it's low maintenance. Spoked wheels are good too. The only minor negative may be that the S10 is slower turning but now that I'm used to it it's not an issue.

There are many more features that made the S10 well worth the investment for me. No regrets at all....

I did over 47,000 miles on my DL1000. Loved it, a bike that literally changed my life. Turned me into a long distance rider. I went from 1K street miles a year to 12K street miles a year after getting the big Vee. It will forever hold a place of honor with me.

The Super Tenere is the upgrade to the DL1000 that Suzuki never bothered to build. The Yamaha is better in every way except a couple:

1) Price
2) Engine heat management when temps are over 90 degrees.
3) DL1000 with 16/43 gearing is a better wheelie bike than the S10

That's all I can think of.

Personally I think it goes into a corner just as fast or faster than my old fork stabilized Vee. Even if it didn't, it's still as much fun in the twisties as the Vee. Bottom line, it really is better across the board.

Dirt_Dad just reminded me of something.

When I went from Sporty machine to the DL1000, I was expecting a bit of a slightly wallowing pig, but was willing to trade that for a bit of off road.

What I ended up finding was that the bike almost as capable on the tarmac, but was doing it without the fatigue factor at the end of the day. So I was doing more miles more often. I often found that I would keep pressing on, rather than turning around. It also was better off road so I not only pressed on, I went more places.

The S10 to me seemed like it would be even easier and more capable all over.

And that is exactly what is so hard to convey with a "lap around the block" test ride. Add to that you have to know how to use the modes because the S10 defaults to "safe mode". If you don't know that you can be left wondering why it seems so underwhelming. None of the Stealers even bothered to run through all that with me although the first ride was a ride day and they were a bit busy.

I would just like to clarify that the steering I found slower was not by much and after about 5km I had really forgotten about it. It well and truly made up for that small detail in other areas.

Cheers
Graham

After owning a DL1000 as well, I go to the shaft vs chain thing first and foremost. Then factore in all the other modern amenities we have on the S10 and there is no comparison to the DL. Both are fun, both engines are good, the Tenere a lot more fine tuned. Over-all, the Tenere is a DL1000 character with a Honda ST1300 style drivetrain.

I switched from years of sportsbikes to a GS, now looking at an S10 (and have ridden a couple)

Modern bikes are far more capable than modern riders, the technology improvements in the last 30-40 years ensure most riders can't get near the limits of "average" motorcycles, forget your S1000RR etc.

I am as fast on a GS / S10 / CB500 in the twisties as I would be on a ZX10R, I had a mate race CB500's in the late 90's, on a track he was faster on his 51BHP, spindly framed, skinny tyred commuter bike as me and my mates were on bikes with twice the power and the most modern suspecnsion and chassis technology.

This is the reason I love bikes like the S10 even more, as I can use more than 10% of the perfromance, and amaze the Power Rangers on their YZGSZX1000RRSP's as I sat up the chuff on the twisties on my big, overweight, underpowered, slow, crappy bike on rubbish skinny tyres.

The best thing is I don't find myself doing 150mph everywhere and having to worry about doing a stretch at her Majesty's pleasure as I have left the fast roads behind, and now have fun on nadgery little lanes, with crap on the road and preferably grass or mud down the centre, this is where 50mph can seem pretty damn quick - and no "fast" bike would even get close.

Seems to be the general consensus.

Congrats mate ::008::
