S10 vs Bambi

On my way to MotoGP Indy and I manage to strike a deer which leaped out from behind an oncoming vehicle.

I was going a solid 35 when I saw the head poking just above the tailgate. Got a little braking in but I ended up creaming center mass into Bambi. The deer dragged the bike to the side of the road into a little drainage ditch. I flew straight (ATGATT) and slid for a good 30+ feet. The bike slid on the radiator side (no crash bars) and literally demolished the entire front.

Aside for the body work, it still rode. The radiator is twisted so it doesn't cool as well. Runs a little warmer going down the interstate but nothing to be concerned about. The fan is also busted so I just have to shut it off while at a stop light.

What a bang-up intro to the forum! :D Glad you emerged relatively unscathed. ::008::

A friend has hit deer twice on his FJR and both times could ride home, Yamis are built tough.

That's unlucky, I suppose the main thing is that your alive and well. I had a Blackbird a few years ago and while on holiday in Switzerland on a twisty mountain pass, as I rounded a bend, a suicidal sheep jumped down off rocks at the side of the road and I more or less hit it as I saw it. Luckily I did not hit it centrally and although I had a tankslapper the bike pulled out of it. I think having the weight of the wife on the back helped, but I never mention that. The damage was enough for the bike to be written off, but bikes are replaceable, people aren't. Glad you came out of it OK

Welcome to the forum TeneRay ... that's quite an intro.

I'm glad that you sound like you're ok ... them critters don't usually take prisoners. Bike stood up well by the looks.

You'd better start tapping up the members for some odd spares .....

Teneray, I meet you at the Laurel Fork Ride this April. I was the other S10 rider. I'm saddened to hear you hit Bambi, but I'm also thankful that you are OK (as others have echoed on this thread).

Looks like you have the beginning of a naked hoodlum bike (just kidding) with the plastic removal work performed by Bambi. I'm happy to hear that it is still drivable, that is amazing and a testament to the ruggedness of the bike. Please let us know what you plan to do with the bike, if it is repaired, etc...

Welcome aboard to the lunatic fringe knows as the SuperTenere forum. It was quite an intro as Swagger stated.

I lurk here but post on ADV.

I figured posting this could provide some useful info on showing the robustness of the Super Tenere, especially without any crash bars while landing on the radiator side.

My only concern is finding a radiator that can closely match the current one at a lesser price than OEM or Bikebandit. I could care less about bodywork.

I can understand that for an old beater bike but I'd be putting an OEM radiator on the S10...

Mighty poor !!!.. Bad luck all around, but I suspect you fared better than the deer. They aren't very considerate critters sometimes. Glad you were able to walk/ride/amble away from that one. Let's be careful out there. ::26:: R

Ouch! Sorry to see all the carnage but awesome you were able to ride off! The engine was likely running warmer with no fairing to force air through the radiator. Before replacing that radiator, consider sending it to Mylers in Utah. They work miracles with twisted and leaking radiators for a fraction of a new one.

Glad your doing well and want to ride, I had my encounter with a Land Mine as well on my Triumph, that's how it felt to me when I had my day with the Volvo front end sideways.
I just bought my Tenere it will be three weeks tomorrow, love riding and just took it as a lesson learned..

The Flying Monkeys are out there!!

Get well and ride.. ::008::

Glad to see you are all ok. I too decided to have a go headbutting Bambi, he won. Have to say though, you are correct in your assesment of the bike. "Its one tough bike."

I do hate those furry self-propelled road blocks. Glad you came out of it alright. They are everywhere around here and a huge danger. Sorry to hear you had to meet one in person.

We'll see if I can get something accomplished in time for LF 2014. I have some ides floating around in that 8 pounds of gray matter.

Thanks a bunch for the Myler tip. Looks like I'll be doing business with them soon.

Lucky....Very lucky.
Good thing you wern't going 55 when that happened.
I took out a german shepard once back when I was in high school coming home from a party late at night. Not sure but I think that was the last time he chased motorcycles. O:)

Effing hoofrats, I hate 'em.

Glad you're OK. I hit one a few years back on my KLR, you have my sympathy.
