Sorry if this has already been taken up elsewhere, but latest issue of Motorrad magazine has big test of about 8 adventure tourer bikes. S10 in World Tourer clothing takes a strong 3rd place after R1200GS (1st) and the new Triumph Tiger Explorer. Strong points for the Tenere being chassis and suspension that "is as good as the BMW electronically adjustable suspension". The S10 gets the usual criticism for flat engine response. I didn't read the article fully to understand the test conditions and all the results. Looks like a decent review though based on my quick glance.

I can't help but wonder how a flashed ECU would have affected the test ranking?

Good post, but take the results with a grain of salt. Although I have not ridden a S10 with ECU Flash, from what I read here it would definitely address the issue. In fairness to other makes, there are after market products to address each bike's shortcomings or to enhance strong qualities. I read an article a few months ago comparing the S10, 1200GS, and the KTM. The article smartly articulated which model was best for each type of rider: BMW for mostly highway riders, KTM for mostly off-road riders, and S10 for best overall.

The best part of the S10 in my opinion? For 99 percent of riders, there is not much discernible difference in the top models' performance. What is discernible is the lower price, which leaves lots of extra money for farklling!

Good points. I am just happy to see more balanced and better reviews popping up. For example the Ducati MS1200 was behind the Tenere in the ranking. Compare with MCN UK's early, pathetic shoot out where the Duc took 1st place. Or was that 2nd after the GS, can't really remember.

In the UK the Yamaha is expensive which also hits it hard in reviews, especially as the BMW, is considered to be well made and relable ::025::

A base GS is about £1,750 cheaper than the Tenere, enough to add Computer, Traction Control, ABS, Tyre Pressure Sensors and still have a bit left over.

The other issue is magazines tend to compare on list proce of stock bike, but BMW always load the magazine bikes, so the tester judges the BMW at £10,750 Vs £11,999 for the Yamaha - when the bike he is riding is probably @ £13,000.

I think if the Yamaha was the same price as a standard GS in the UK it would have sold much better as not only would it have looked better value I think the tests would have been kinder.

Yeah, I just don't understand the relative pricing of the Tenere in the UK. Here in Sweden the S10 was originally sold at a base price of 149000 SEK which at that time put it about 10000 SEK under the base price of a naked GS. Now the S10 has a sales price from 124900 to max 139900 in Sweden making is considerably cheaper than the GS.

In Spain the ST is a lot cheaper than the BMW.
I’m waiting for a proper big trail test. All the reviews I saw are on road. If they try a trail bike they must run also in dirt tracks where the ST is the best bike after the KTM990.

Sounds like this magazine is a promoter of European products and has done a street-oriented evaluation. The results are not surprising.

As for engine character, you can improve that with an ECU flash (I have that), but the top-end pull on most any other bike in this category is stronger, and that's apparantly what this street- oriented review is looking for when they speak of engine character.

I rode a 1200gs and my Tenere back to back a few weeks ago. The BMW had a better throttle response and that was about it. For me the Tenere beat it hands down, even in weight. The BMW is lighter but the Tenere is so well balanced it felt A LOT lighter to me. I think the Explorer is very ugly and I don't like the components on it or how it is put together. I would still like to take one for a ride. I'm sure that triple is magical on the road, but for me there is more to motorcycling than having the most HP. A few pics of the Explorer I took a few weeks ago at IronHorse.
