My Honda NT700V and my Subaru Legacy both have mileage computers, and both read high. I think it's just one of those things that they all do. Seems like they could get it right if they wanted, so it's probably intentional. But why, I dunno.

Oh, and I have a Scangauge device that plugs into a car diagnostic port, that I ran for several thousand miles in my F-150. It read high as well, but there was a process to fine tune it (which I never did, but supposedly it could be done).

I have done 13 fill ups since I bought the bike in Sept, I have Hepco-Becker 30 L saddle bags and the 40 L top box, my overall average has been 46.3 mpg, a high of 49.4 mpg and a low of 43.6 mpg. The last two fill ups have been the lowest (both were 43.6 mpg), a drop of 2.7 mpg (5.8% drop). All measurements taken from odometer and calculated via the spreadsheet I have set up.

I kept careful track for 5200 miles of gas-pump/odometer mileage vs. computer mileage and noted the computer averaging 2 mpg high.

The imperial gallon reference in the OM is definitely a head scratcher. My theory is something got lost in the translation from the UK manual to the US one and that Yamaha intends for the computer to be based on US gals and that the error we're seeing is normal optimistic "fudge factor" that seems to be common on mileage computers, car or bike. For a US bike, it makes more sense to me that the computer is reading 5% high on US gallons rather than 10% low on a measurement system that is not in use in the US.

I think you are right on about this Mark, I have noticed if I am traveling all day [No sitting stopped , or warming up] the bikes computer is very close to actual figures.

Hello everybody.
My S10 is always on Sport mode. Most of the time I ride in the city (NY) and I ride pretty agressive. In the city computer shows average 30.5 m/g and actually it is around 26 m/g. On ride that I did outside city I also kept it on S mode and it showed 42 m/g average and I calculated 38.5 m/g. I always use 93 octane gas.
I weight 238 lbs. and have no accesorries on bike.

I rolled into Yeehaw Junction, Florida yesterday on my way to West Palm Beach, 280 miles from my previous fill up. 47 miles on the F-trip and it took 5.74 gallons for 48.8mpg. That’s the longest I’ve gone on a tank and the best mileage I’ve gotten…so far. :)

Overall average is 42.8 mpg over 4,945 miles.

I have almost 10,000 KM ( 6 K miles) and the last bit has been 50/50 solo / two up. Running on I -5 ata constant GPS indicated 80-82 MPH tank to tank two up with Cal Sci shield (the tallest) Jesse bags and the Yamaha wind deflectors I am getting 34-36 MPG on the computer. I did a few rough calculations after I filled up each time and that seems about right.

Mileage into a strong headwind fell into 29-30 range.

I will be adding a fuel cell for longer cross continent rides.

Riding mostly city miles with ~5 miles of freeway on my 12 mile commute. Struggling to get better than 38. Using the instant MPG gauge I was able to get just over 40. High so far in 1000 miles is 42.5. S vs. T mode seems to make little if any difference. I find the 50mpg reports baffling, I dream of that kind of mileage. I need to get the bike out of town on a trip to see if things improve.

I recently took a 1,500 miles five day trip to Sacramento Delta, Woodside (Alice's Restaurant), Soquel, Watsonville, Gilroy, Monterey, Carmel Valley, Greenfield, Morro Bay, Arroyo Grande, Ventura, Oxnard, Redondo Beach, Long Beach, Malibu, Cambria, Ragged Point, Big Sur, Mt Hamilton, and The Junction, Patterson... 160, 4, 580, 92, 35, Soquel San Jose Rd, Soquel Dr, Freedom Blvd, 152, Mt Madonna, Elkhorn Rd, 156, 1, Carmel Valley Rd, Robinson Canyon Rd, 101, 41, Los Osos Valley Rd, Turri Rd, Foxen Canyon Rd, Tepusquet Rd, 154, 405, PCH, Old Creek Rd, Santa Rosa Creek Rd, Quimby Rd, Mt Hamilton Rd, San Antonio Valley Rd, Del Puerto Canyon Rd, I-5. All asphalt.

I say this to show the diverse locations and roads I traveled... I cruised some of the roads, rode to piss out of the twisties, WFO on the back road one laners, freeway'd the freeways, grid lock in LA traffic, fell in love with Big Sur Hwy (again), scared to crap out of myself on Mt Hamilton, and paced 75 mph traffic on I-5...

I am the guy who recently was whining about getting 40 MPG around home. This trip I got as high as 50 MPG (2.2 gal @ 111 miles) and as low as 42 MPG but probably averaged 44-45 MPG for the trip. I contribute the difference in MPG to cold weather (not good) and the number of cold start ups per tank (not good). Many of the tanks on the trip were no cold start ups and all of the tanks had warmer weather.

I am running the stock windshield in the low position, OEM side cases, 220 lbs rider, seat in the low position... Also learning to run the engine 4,000-6,000 RPMs.

I listed the places and roads to show the riding diversity and that I got better gas mileage with less cold start ups and warmer weather but... yes it was a good trip and I have become very bad about not taking pictures. Gotta work on that. I should do a photo-less RR anyway.

I lived in Mountain view, Sunnyvale, Stockton, and San Diego areas for while, so I've been to many of those places. I think it was a crime to not at least take pictures at Big Sur :):) jaw-dropping scenery there!

I was surprised. Here is the route for that short tank.
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Arroyo+Grande,+CA&daddr=CA-166+E+to:Tepusquet+Rd+to:Los+Olivos,+CA+to:Carpinteria,+CA&hl=en&ll=34.773204,-120.055847&spn=1.310754,2.705383&sll=34.808729,-120.241241&sspn=0.327554,0.676346&geocode=FfvdFwIde-7P-CnPzI5CZF7sgDHtadVpkGrBpA%3BFXxhFgIdrK3V-A%3BFYCqFAIdonvV-A%3BFcX8EAIdwTDX-CnbCvmcYgfsgDEb9JEldFv7LA%3BFaTiDAIdCEvg-CmhYhpu1A7pgDHrtxt7ySOVFg&vpsrc=6&mra=ls&t=h&z=9

A through B is a lot of constant throttle. C is a narrow road over a beautiful pass ridden leisurely. Most of 154 is heavily patrolled and was 45-50 MPH. 101 was cruised at 65-70. Not a lot of throttle movement for this tank.

I have got 50 MPG probably a half dozen times but it usually involved hills, 40-50 MPH, and a lot of full off throttle (99.9 MPG). So when I started getting 40 MPG you can guess my surprise. I am going to readjust the fuel injection to see if this helps.

I am going to Miami for New Years, 900 plus miles of straight no fun interstate. I will be going 75 to 85mph and I stop every 175 to 200 miles for gas. This will be my best test for mpg. Bike now has 1k miles on it so I feel it is broken in. PS I have installed a parabellum 26" windshield. If I can get 42 to 45 I will be happy.

A lot will depend on the wind. My mileage goes in the dumper at those speeds if there is much of a head or cross wind.

Report back and lets us know.

O well, I wish I could get some of these numbers. My best tank was 39.5 and worst was 30 MPG. Must be troubles in my bike. I ride mostly in sport mode so far but it's only been seven tank-fulls.
I just switched to the Cal Sci Short windshield this week. Having the short screen has sure made the bike feel like it looks better, which IMO it does look like it feels better. For my 6'4 body I guess I need to go taller not shorter for eliminating the buffeting although it's better now and will be cooler in the summer yet I DIGRESS, I'll keep an eye on the MPG to see what happens. I am just happy I'm not getting 20 MPG in my old 1980 Volvo ....

You give me hope Tim. I can't wait for a trip out of town. Commuting is better than nothing but I would like to see what this baby can really do.

Friday evening rode this route. A through C with a friend that was returning to SoCal. I got 49 MPG with a lot of this being slow twisties. C through E was half commute traffic (splitting lanes) and the remainder 65-75. Haven't filled up yet but think I got 44 MPG. The weather was cool to cold with little to no wind. Actually on top of Mt Hamilton it might have been 32 in the shade. My ass was froze! Very happy to get off the mountain.
