"Quality . . . you know what it is, yet you don't know what it is. But that's self-contradictory. But some things are better than others, that is, they have more quality. But when you try to say what the quality is, apart from the things that have it, it all goes poof! There's nothing to talk about. But if you can't say what Quality is, how do you know what it is, or how do you know that it even exists? If no one knows what it is, then for all practical purposes it doesn't exist at all. But for all practical purposes it really does exist."

I read that book a couple of years ago. I must be a shallow thinker, because I just didn't get it. But never-the-less, RIP.

It was the text for a college class I took in '89/'90.
I dropped the class... just could not get into it.

Maybe I'll give it another try someday in audio book format.

I'm going to try to read it again. Have never managed to finish it. I'll take it on my cross country trip this summer and if things don't work out, well, at least I won't run out of toilet paper while camping.

just listened to the audio version after several reads early in my life (including college).

Seemed to make more sense now and the traveling sections were more interesting.

Worth the effort.

ROBERT PIRSIG,ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE, Passing this April24th

CBC Radio in Canada did one of the very rare interviews with him and it's on YouTube, well worth a listen.

His life was sometimes tragic ,losing his son who traveled with him on the Zen trip to a mugging..

Here's the YouTube link
