Bikes are packed, we're 10 days away before setting off. Have storage arranged with Jan in Brooking, thank you Jan.

Need some advice about riding near Truckee, CA. Keep in mind that the idea on the trip is: wake up, check weather, head where the good weather is.
So the map is more of a very rough guide line to keep us to plan for the 6 days riding. But looking at the weather app, it's still damn cold there, may need to stick to the coast.

any thoughts...I've only ridden to northern california in the past, so I don't know the state well.
thanks in advance.

The Weather Channel is pretty accurate, we haven't had hardly any rain in the last 2months. The map that shows you going to Fort Bragg, the road from Leggett 101 to 1 is one of best motorcycle roads you can ride. Also a little farther down, the road from 1, Stewarts Point to Calistoga. You never know, but weather I don't think will be an issue

as I said, we may do the coast side first, but I need to be at the beemer shop in errr....Scotts valley to pick up my new Yacubar shock. And they are closed, sunday monday, so we're hoping to see them wed, thursday to pick up the shock.

either way it will be a blast.

Weather Channel aside, you're a wee bit early for some of the secondary road mountain passes that get closed for snow. In CA check w/ www.dot.ca.gov

perfect, exactly what I was looking for.
I know we're a bit early, but for us it's a treat. I have been out a few times this year...see below.
+2 is a cold day, +10 is a great day (celcius)

I wouldn't be mucking around in Lassen and the Sierras N and S of Truckee in March. You can potentially make it through since the major routes are plowed, but there will be lots of ice and snow around. I did Susanville to Redding in mid-Sept of last year and it was below freezing at the higher elevations even mid-morning.

With some of the best roads in the world N of SF, I'd suggest sticking to the coast, perhaps working your way around Lake Berryesea to work you way over the the valley. The W foothills of the Sierras should be nice and the rest of your route, especially the S Calif coastal range stuff should be very pleasant.

The road through Zenia just W of Garberville may or may not be open. While this is a wonderful road, I'd check with the locals and if you're not sure, instead work the Lost Coast through Petrolia and then down to near Shelter Cove. Then do Leggett to the coast, followed by a run down to Fort Bragg and back to Willits. From there, it is an easy hook up to points S or Lake Berryesea. (If you're really ambitious, you can do Usal Rd between Shelter Cove and the hookup to 1 and experience the true Lost Coast, but this is not a big-bike friendly road, especially if the weather has been rainy.)

You're a month earlier than optimal, but sounds like a great trip. I'd just stay out of elevation in the Sierras.

I second the advice to stay out of the Sierras this time of year - plenty of other opportunities. The coast is great. Usal Rd is awesome but will turn to snot if it's been raining.

I know when we go down there around the end of April we stay away from anything 5000 ASL as we nearly always find snow and most passes are not open or cleaned yet.

Hey Greg, I live in Truckee, All though it is snowing this morning we are very much below the normal amount of snow for this time of year. I take blame for that . First time in years I decided to buy a ski pass. Anyway there is no problem on any paved roads thru the Truckee area and I would say that a lot of the dirt roads can be ridden depending on elevation. What were you thinking as far as riding around Truckee?

Hi Mike,
if you click on the first lenghty link the map is detailed well.
I'm working on a second route option that will keep us to the coast, and then rejoin the mountains east of Fresno, to go check out King's canyon, head south to bakersfield etc.. etc..
I'm not worried about any off road work, as the guys im going with have road bikes (ST1300, 2013 ZX14), i'm taking my vfr anyways, the tenere is staying at home

You're so close to Yosemite, be a shame to miss it.
