Hello All,

I am planning a trip to Colorado in the second half of June and am wondering whether I might still encounter snow in some of the higher altitudes? What about temps?

Your input will be very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Chris

At the highest elevations, snow can occur year-round -- but is generally uncommon after Memorial Day. Temps in the high country can drop into the 20s overnight, so an early-morning start can be nippy. A heated vest would be a good idea.

You probably would find snow at higher elevations if exploring off-road.

Enjoy!

Make trips from Texas late June early July. Varies by year, but there is snow at passes. Not an issue on the road. I use a full stitch to travel. Sun shining, the cool is nice. Maybe a sweat shirt. Will be good to go.

I'll be out there for the RUSH show in July. I'm really tempted to ride from Florida.

Do you know your route through the state yet?
As others have posted high passes can have snow any time of year, it's just less likely late June to August. Some trails may have snow on them if on the north side of a slope or trees (shaded). Of course the high passes won't have trees, but you will see plenty of water coming down the trails due to snow melt.
Rain can blow in most any afternoon as well as wind. Bring some good warm gloves and a warm layer for under your coat. A rain suit never hurts.

Great input, guys! Thanks!
I doubt I will do any dirt trails, only regular roads. I will ride two up, also. As far as which route - in the latest issue of Rider magazine is a cool sounding loop I would like to do. I think one of the roads is the Million Dollar Highway.

The Million Dollar Highway is a winner, as is the approach to Durango from the east on 160. If you have the time, Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park is even more dramatic. And if you're close to Denver, a ride up the Mount Evans road to approximately 14,000 feet is absolutely worthwhile. Then there's Independence Pass, highway 125 from Granby up to Rand, Monarch Pass (more fun EB than WB, IMHO)...

I grew up in Colorado in the 60's. You "best" be able to dress for any kind of riding situation. A few years ago I had to stay in Boulder due to the fact that the Eisenhower tunnel was closed due to snow...in July! If you do not have any electric gear I would suggest it is time to buy it. I used mine a lot. Warm during the day...but coooooool at night!
Don'f forget to eat at the Blue Parrot in Louisville. The best Italian spag you will ever eat.

The Alpine Loop out of Lake City is a nice ride but Engineer Pass may still be covered in snow in June.

I will be doing similar riding through the area the beginning of June on my way to California then north up to B.C. On the road for a month before returning to Toronto. Anyone available is welcome to tag along for a run or two. Since we will be a few weeks apart have a great trip. Ride Safe. I have a lot of roads I want to see and places I want to go. Even with a month I hope I can fit it all in!
