my rear preload adjuster doesn't click anymore and the indicator needle is stuck in the top position. Is this an indication of a stripped out handle or could it be bad internals. For what its worth one day I was at a stop light fiddling with my preload while I was sitting on the seat :-X . I only asjlk here because its a pain getting to the dealeship.

If it's under warranty the whole shock will get replaced. Yes it is a classic case of plastic threads no likey metal threads over time. Not a common occurrence, but some folks have had it happen.

Yea, for some reason Yamaha replaces the whole shock, as Karson stated.

I think Eagle Mike (of KLR fame) machined up a billet knob for our shock at one time.

My knob was ok, the problem was internal, Yamaha replaced the whole shock two weeks after the warranty was expired.

So the shock was good? That's great news! And yes, Eagle Mike goods are.....well, always GOOD.

Just my opinion, but I would only turn that nob while off the bike. Might even put it up on centerstand. Reduce the resistance.

Oddly enough, I had this issue shortly after getting the bike. I upped the preload on the forks and tried to do the same with the shock, could only get it about halfway between the soft and hard. After seeing the thread, I went outside and backed it all the way out to the softest setting, then cranked it down. Worked perfectly as designed, now my rear shock isn't flabby feeling. Hurray. I put it on the next line up from the hardest setting. Can't wait to hit the dirt this weekend and see if it helps.

I spun the plastic knob, got a new shock from yamaha and bought the eagle mike part for it.

It's caused by adjusting the shock without the bike on the center stand or even worse, with you on it. I did both.

The book says to put it on the center stand.

I have finger adjuster knobs for the front, too. They are very difficult to turn with the bike on the ground. Center stand...
