Rear headlight cover and LED option

So I went towards the LED headlamp route, mainly due to the wire harness recall NOT being applied on my bike. The connector was heating up and melting and often I find only 1 headlamp is working. Due to unavailability of Yamaha service in my country, the next best thing is to find a cooler solution to the connectors. The root cause of the wire harness issue was the thermal expansion of the brass connector being greater than the H7 connectors, causing an air gap to form between them, which then cause electrical arching and then high heat --> melting of plastic and poor connectivity.

I bough a pair of H7 COB type LED headlamps, chose the type with braided steel heat sink so that the profile is thinner and would not cause a non fit of the dust cover. WRONG! After installing them, the dust cover was not able to shut due to the "Current Driver" electronic module. Temporary, I use a Clean-Room head cover to cover them. It is not waterproof but at least keeps the dust out, and had to look for another solution.

Found these at Aliexpress. Made of flexible rubber. It has many 'convolutions' to serve as a seal over the head lamp housing opening.

Prior to install, form it this way. My LED lamps, and I guess most of typical LED lamps comes in 2 piece that are detachable. 1 piece mounts to the head lamp housing, sort of a base plate. The spring wire lock of the housing catches and secures this plate. Then the LED lamp is installed over this plate with a twist and lock. The smaller diameter convolutions goes into the head lamp housing.

Installed. Note that there is still a wire that runs out of the head lamp housing that connects to the Current driver electronic module.

Might as well get the turn signals changed to LED. Bought 4 of these 1156 type LED bulbs. Also bought a LED Relay to get a normal flash rate. These were bright but somewhat is not as bright compared to the stock incandescent bulb. But their brightness is sufficient to be visible even on bright day. (Yes, tested with the setting sun behind my bike, and could still see clearly the LED light). Without the LED Relay (btw, 2 pins and compatible to stock connectors), the flash rate was at least double.

Lessons learned:
1. Should have got the small LED chip type with more focused light source rather than the COB type (often seen as a larger surface area LED).
2. The stock dust cover is never going to closed up with these LED bulbs. Perhaps the ones that have fan may be a better option as it would run cooler.

COST:
1. H7 COB Led lamp pair - $25 (local online - Lazada.com.my)
2. Rubber Dust Cover pair - $2.93 (Aliexpress)
3. 1156 Amber LED bulb QTY = 4 - $8 (Aliexpress)
4. LED Relay 2 pin - $2.35 (Aliexpress)

Note: these Aliexpress pricing are super low as I purchased them during the 11.11 sale.

Re: Replacement Dust Cover for LED head lamps

I believe a couple of members, from Sweden and the UK have installed the same Steel braided LEDs without issues using the stock caps, they trimmed a bit of the driver edges down and recessed them into the housing......

Just so you know, you can order the headlight harness recall kit yourself. Its not that expensive. Even with the LESs, it would be a good idea.

Almost correct. Our local Yamaha distributor does not carry officially the S10. The brought in the MT09 Tracer 2 years after it was launched and have since suspended the import, and speculation has it that they plan to manufacture internally as to give it a better pricing.

So, I purchased my bike through what you call a 'grey' market, whereby, the import tax is heavily reduced by declaring it as a used import. A fully imported bike through the normal import process will cost me US$30K. Going through the grey market route, I pay US$20K. Yeap, my kleptocratic, world's top ten corrupted country in the world tax us heavily on vehicle imports. My bike is a left over Aussie 2012 bike that a grey imported got in. Completely brand new.

Really. Thanks. Let me find out how much it will cost me. The wiring work is what is going to discourage me going this route.

Installing the new wire harness will only take about an hour, removal of the tupperware takes the time.......

OK, this is better than the one I showed earlier, much cheaper and better fitment. But, you need to be able to accept using a toilet part.

Available in Ace Hardware, or any other hardware stores.

This is a 3" diameter rubber pipe coupler. There is a 2.5" diameter being sold, so don't take this size.

Sorry for the pink sponges, but that's all I could find to secure down that driver. I am purchasing another H7 LED set that does not have these Current Drivers configured this way.

Anyone got an aftermarket source for the rear headlight cap / covers, that are deep enough to enable the use of LED headlights?

That is, the same "deep dish" rear caps sold as part of the Cyclops kits?

I just want the covers. Anyone sell these?

Thanks,

Re: Rear Headlight Cover Source? '14+ Tenere.

You wont find any, Cyclops are the only ones, and they will not sell separately. The best you can do is look up another thread where 2daMax made use of plumbing hardware that works well.

OK, thanks. I'll look that up...

So, no one knows who is supplying Cyclops with their plastic rear cover parts? After all this time? I'm almost certain they don't make them, themselves. Huh...

Looking at them in hand, I believe they are 3D printed. If Cyclops aren't making them for themselves, they are using a vendor under some kind of an exclusive agreement. I don't think there's a patent on them (I could be wrong) so one would be free to develop their own copy or version if so inclined.

Well, that's a possibility, but sounds like a lot of work.

Soooo...

I think I'll use 2DaMax's method (I found it. Interesting :)

Cyclops sent me another cover for a warranty and he said they make them in house.. one of the 3 locking tabs don't line up exact as we talked about also but they covered it and all is well.

My Cyclops covers were not quite round, right where the tabs were oddly, and one would mostly pop off. I used a heat gun and reshaped it, seems to seal better and hold now. Any more issues with it and I'll call them.
