Just put fresh tires on the bike this past weekend and got out for a test spin this evening. When I got home from a ride on the highway I was doing a once over to make sure there were no issue and I noticed when I touched the rear driveshaft pumpkin that it was hot to the touch. I suspect that this is normal but this is the first time I have ever placed my hand on the pumpkin and I am curious if it's normal for the rear drive to get that hot?

That's what I figured, not sure why I have never touched it before.

Running synthetic gear oil will reduct the temps. I like Valvoline SynPower 75/90wt GL5. And yes, what you felt is normal.

Thanks for the information EricV, I was wondering about this myself as I placed my hand on "the pumpkin" and found it to be hot.
