I purchased a new XT1200 in May and exported it to the Turks & Caicos Island where I live. Not a very big island but plenty of on/off road mix so the bike was an ideal choice. The drivers over here are lunatics so grabbing their attention that you are slowing down is a very good idea. I have a processor based brake light module capable of switching 50 watts/four amps and an additional reg plate surround fitted with two rows of LED’s that incorporate both running lights and brake lights that I would like to fit. This unit draws 60ma on the running lights and 600ma on the brake lights. My question is has anyone undertaken this and can the brake light circuitry put up with an additional 600ma? I have three wires Black (ground), blue (running light?) and yellow with what I imagine to be two large resistors in series (brake light?). I doubt the 60ma for the running light will cause any problems. I notice the yellow wire is fed back to the ABS ECU. The voltage to this is likely to pulse as the load switches, will this cause problems. How much current does the factory brake light pull? My back light wiring connectors feed all the way back under the rider next to the ABS block. I was going to use a Molex connector to adapt the wiring closer to the light and shroud the new cables in heat shrink. The factory shop manual under the fault section for the brake light suggest that one cause of failure of failure could be “too many electrical accessories fitted”. This would suggest that it will not cause problems but possibly stop the light from working. The point is that I doubt the ABS ECU is a cheap item! Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.
