I'll be headed across Canada, east to west, in about three weeks. I'm looking for advice on the quickest route through or around Montreal. Thinking about staying on the south shore Route 30 to Vaudreuil-Dorion and reconnect with the Trans-Canada. Especially interested in road construction and high traffic times to avoid.

Absolutely. The toll for the 30 is cheap VS having to deal with Montreal. I go on the south shore from Ottawa a couple times a year and highway 30 has always been trouble free.

As for traffic, highway 30 is not so bad at anytime since it's not a connection to Montreal in any way. There might be people but it's always moving 80-100 except at the toll booth but lots of bays so it's still fast.

Just avoid typical HIGH traffic days like Friday afternoons 15:00-18:00 and it'll be fine.

I rode 30 both ways last month, $2.80 each way and no slowdowns except for the toll booth. Exit 12 on autoroute 20 is under construction and was backed up 10 kms both ways, hopefully cleared up by the time you arrive.

Thank you both for verifying my choice on Route 30.
How do you quickly navigate a toll booth while sitting atop your bike?
Do you just drop coins in a basket?

That toll booth takes credit cards. Tap or slide, I dont remember but they do. Makes it easy if you keep it accessible in your tank bag. That's what I do. Just dont drop it :D

2.80 per crossing, well worth not having to deal with the Montreal traffic and stress. It's hell on a car, I avoid it like the pest when i'm riding.

You can take the scenic route near the St-Lawrence for a few Kms in that area if you see it's jammed on google maps traffic or Waze. Saved my ass more than once also.

No coin basket, actual humans at the cash lanes and they are quick with making change. Have a 5 handy, stuff the change in your pocket and go.
