Question on S10 carrying capacity...

Hello, new member here. I'm thinking very seriously of getting a new S10 after 12 years with an 1150GS.

I do a lot of long-distance riding with my wife and too much luggage; how does the S10 handle two-up with heavy loads?

If this has been covered in the forum elsewhere, accept my apologies and direct me accordingly.

Thanks much.

The rear shock seems to be a little under sprung for the heavier loads. Coming from a long term GS you've prolly already got experience with upgrading your spring rates. I'm 300 solo plus Jesse's, plus camping gear, somewhere north of 400# and the bike is two ticks off max preload and everything seems fine. LOL, obviously it can be better, but I'm not that sensitive.

I had a GS and found it a bit undersprung for two-up, especially when loaded, it also struggled with damping, I fitted Wilburs to the 1200GS I had before and it was a revelation. It was custom made and they put a 150 spring on (up from OE 140)

Yesterday I fitted a Wilburs to the Tenere, they also recommended a 150 spring (up from 137) I have not ridden two-up yet, but the extra stiffness should be adequate, especially as the OE unit was not really much worse than the GS to be honest.

What did surprise me is how much better the Tenere handled bumps after the GS, even with the Wilburs on it was not as plush as the stock Yamaha shock, and the Wilburs on the Yamaha is something else, despite the stiffer spring it rides bumps MUCH better.

Will update about two-up performance after we have been out and about with luggage.

Dunno how it will compare to an 1150 GS as I have never ridden one, but to be honest the rest of the bike is so good I would say go for it, a decent aftermarket shock is a small outlay in the grand scheme of things, and the OE stuff tends to go off after a couple of years anyway.

I ride two up most of the time on the S10. It's pretty heavy with Jaxon's Bash Plate, Crash Bars, Happy Trails 9" Tetons, Alt Riders Tail Plate etc. I am at 235 and my wife is about 140. We spend a lot of time off rode in the Sierra's on fire trails and on OHV trails . The S10 suspension does a great job. I have to remember its not my old YZ400 or RM250 when it comes to the difference in weight or I sometimes get in trouble.

I wanna say that the max load is like 460#? I know it's in the owner's manual, just can't get to it at the moment.

Load-wise, it's easily a match for the GS and probably better, as I don't worry about the rear drive failing or frame cracking. That's why the Tenere weighs more. (lower cg though)

Making my pillion all-day happy cost me a scrap piece of 3/8" plastic to better level the rear seat, then add an AirHawk.

The Tenere also has PLENTY of alternator output for heated gear, lights, etc.

The S10 weights less than an old GS1150 or a new GSA. Certainly a lot more snap and can carry heavier loads and handle better. TC and ABS on the S10 also work better than on a new GS. Sold my 08 GS to get the S10 and was very suprised how much better the S10 is. ::001::

There is a picture around here of somebody hauling a stack of wood with theirs. It can carry a good load.
