Question about OEM heated grips on '14 or '15 NON ES

Has anyone that has installed the OEM heated grips on a 2014+ non ES know what activates the "grip warmer" icon on the dash. Without heated grips, the grip warmer icon is not even part of the display menu. There are a pair of 2 pin connectors (one black, and one gray) that are dedicated to the OEM grips and it looks like nothing else but that, so, I'm thinking of installing the Oxford's in place of the OEM's, but before I go cutting the wiring harness on the bike to accommodate the different pin connectors on the Oxford's, I was hoping that someone that has installed OEM grips could tell me that just the installation itself, activates the icon.

Thanks,
Scott

Had mine fitted by dealer on non es model, throttle grip failed after a while and icon wouldn't come up on menu until replaced

Not an expert, but we've had several reports that hooking the OEM grip heaters up activates the bike's dash systems without any re-programming or other intervention required - electrically how the bike senses the grips are there, I don't know.

I'd be cautious about using non-OEM grips with the stock bike's wiring as the resistances of the Yamaha ones are reported to be quite a bit different than most aftermarket ones.

I installed mine on a 2014 non es and nothing was needed other than plugging them in to activate the extra menu.

Once they are installed, it's automatic. Just installed some myself about one month ago. You have to turn them on with the menu button. One push to turn on to level one, another push for levels two and three then one more to turn off. Very simple.

Ok, thanks, guys. That's what I was hoping. And Mark, thanks for the heads-up on resistance. Fred Z. warned me of that too. Now, I guess the million dollar question is, what's the resistance of the OEM grips? LOL

According to my service manual...
Left : 1.21-1.48 ohms
Right: 1.17-1.43 ohms
This is when checked at the plugs, so I guess the slightly longer cable on the left grip gives a bit more resistance.

I believe that's generally lower than aftermarket - I recall Symtec's being in the 10-20 ohm range depending on which side and whether you use the H or L element. I recall the Oxfords being in the 5-ohm range, but you should confirm. If this is correct, you'll have much lower heat using Oxfords vs. Yamaha. OTOH, Yamaha's heated grips on the pre-2014 bikes were blisteringly hot on high, so perhaps there is plenty of headroom in the system used on the 2014+.

As you're considering options, keep in mind that for about $200, you can buy the Yamaha heated grips and they'll plug right in. It's still expensive but cheaper by a long shot from Yamaha's ridiculously expensive acc kit which is basically the same grips along with instructions you don't really need.

Thanks for the specs, Bryce.

Yes Mark, the Oxfords are a little higher (I got 6.2 and 7.2 respectively). I am just being anal. The bike has Oxfords on it already but I am just trying to eliminate the Oxford controller and run it through the Yamaha set-up. I guess I'll give it a try and if it doesn't work I can always re-attach the original connectors.
