Getting ready to do my first oil change, I was going to go with the PL14612. Amazon returns two results, the yellow filter, and a blue filter marked Synthetic. I was planning to use Rotilla T6 5w-40 Synthetic, should I also use a synthetic filter, or does it matter?

No problem with either oil. HOWEVER - Be aware of what Purolator writes about the PureOne filters, and it is why I avoid them:

If you're thinking you want to install a PureONE oil filter on your bike, please think again. PureONE oil filters are designed for vehicles, not bikes. Because of PureONE's high efficiency, the motorcycle oil pump may not be able to handle the pressure. The Purolator motorcycle filter line is designed to meet the specific needs of a bike; therefore we highly recommend the use of a Purolator ML filter over a PureONE oil filter. - http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/products/pages/powersportsfilters.aspx

Be aware of the difference between old filters and the new redesigned ones. We have several threads about it and the bottom line is that if the base is concave it will not seat. You'll have a bad leak when you start the engine. You DO want a filter with a conCAVE base. For more info:

I've used Purolator filters of both types for years on other Yamaha bikes w/o issue. Over 160k on the FJR with most Purolator filters, but please accept that as only subjective experience of one person.

Sadly, I can't use them on the Super Ten because they no longer make the 14612 in the 2.625 length, they are now 3" plus and won't fit with my skid plate, (Rumbux). Many of the filter companies changed their shorter filters to 3" size for reasons unknown. Same with the concave to convex issue. I don't buy the reason being to strengthen the threaded area. There weren't reports of filters coming off or breaking there...

Regardless, the sticky has not been updated for some filter lengths. Not going to go into why. Just be aware that some filters no longer fit with various skid plates and double check your available length and the filter length before installing the filter.

Thanks for the quick responses. I did end up with the PL14612 because I'm impatient and didn't wait for the replies. That said, the threads definitely bottomed out before it was good and tight, but its not leaking so I'm not messing with it. As I'm commuting almost 2k miles a month, it'll be replaced soon anyhow.

Just putting in this info in case someone reads this thread in the future.

The filter number is the same but the filter has changed. See the photo. Reports are that the center area of the filter changed from concave to convex and that the outer seal no longer seals. See photo:

The main thread about this issue is here: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=15588.60

One suggested filter that DOES still work and is short enough to not interfere with skid plates is the MAHLE OC 575 Oil Filter.
