Four of the last seven bikes I've purchased have been Super Teneres. I've had the chance to think about my options each time. It didn't take long to pull the trigger on getting the next Tenere. Between my wife an me we have about 90K Tenere miles. I wish I could give you complaints, but whatever we have I have long since forgotten.

Good luck in your research. It's a great bike.

No functional complaints at all. I wish the on-off throttle response in "S" mode at very low RPM was a bit soother, but that can be modified with a re-flash. The engine is a bit mechanically noisy, but that's normal. My only warranty issue was warped front rotors. The bike had been perfect since.

I don't get to ride it enough ! If you asked me about complaints on BMW, Ducati or KTM my list would be long. The 2014 st es is the most worry free bike I've ever owned and it's fun to ride. Not "cool" as the high dollar high HP ADV euro bikes that Ive owned but that sort of swiss army knife charm of ST has grown on me. When I bought the ST I wanted a bike that would be reliable, comfortable, would handle 500 mile days, commute traffic or a dirt road, price really didn't factor in I had the $ to buy any ADV bike I wanted and glad I ended up with the ST. If you want to play hooligan this isn't the bike for that get one of the 150 HP ADV bikes.

I've had my non ES for a year now and no beefs, brilliant bike, does everything you could want. I had some buffeting issues that a screen lip fixed but I'm yet to find a bike that doesn't have some buffeting problems depending on your size and type of helmet.

If you test ride one make it a long ride, the bike gets better the more you ride it, it may seem flat at first compared to some others but it quickly grows on you ::015::

After 6 months of S10 ownership I have had no mechanical or electrical problems at all, and I can't really offer any complaints either. I do have a short wish list tho:
I wish the traction control was switchable while riding, just back off the throttle, switch and go.
I wish the traction control would stay put where I last set it, instead of defaulting to full on whenever I turn the key.
I wish the ABS was switchable, even if it's only the rear.
I wish the speedometer and odometer would switch to miles from kms. (Canada bike quirk)
I wish the turn signals would self-cancel.
I wish the gear indicator worked with the clutch lever pulled.
I wish I would have bought ES.

the engine is a bit rattly and maybe lacks soul, but you get reliability for sure

the bike changes big time after 5-7k, ride one with miles if possible, they pull better and fuel consumption improves

This is a tough decision guys. I have a used 2014 ST (non-ES) with 10 k miles on it for the same price as a new 2014 V-strom 1000. My riding is streets, with very little desire to hit the dirt. I want to tour and travel. My concerns of the ST are weight (I come from a v-strom 650), the gear selector, cooling and of course ergonomics. I can't test ride, so its a crap shoot. Both of these bikes have good ratings from their riders. ...but in different ways. The Vee seems to have a stronger following but that doesn't really mean anything except you just have so much info out there for maintenance, farkles, etc. The ST seems like an unsung hero just waiting to be ridden. Tough!

the weight i dont notice the bike is well balanced and with engine well forward and a long swingarm puts power down well

its got linked brakes, IMO it brakes better than other large adv bikes i have had (GS, KTM 990), the auto application of a bit of rear with front brake means its stable into speedy corners etc, its something i didn't realise i liked until i bought an S10! - you cannot turn it off but why would you?

gears are slick, cooling works but radiator needs side bars to protect,

The position of the headlight passing/flashing switch - just badly positioned. It should really be were the menu switch is.

I was in the same situation as you apart from I came from a DL1000, I was able to test ride the new Strom and a well used Gen 1 S10, the Strom really surprised me, it felt much quicker and snappier than my old one even though mine was well set up with a Power Commander and open pipes, the brakes were great compared to the old bike and it was something like 30kg lighter than the S10 BUT and it's a big BUT the S10 feels lighter than the Strom, even pushing it around it's no more difficult but as soon as you are moving at a walking pace it's so well balanced, it clearly carries its weight very low in the chassis. Don't let the weight bother you, I'd try sitting on both bikes and see how comfortable you find them, I managed 2hrs at a time on my old Strom but can do 5hrs on the S10. The offer Suzuki had on the Strom was awesome and it was nearly a deal breaker but luckily my Mrs talked me into the S10, I was going with my head for the better price but I'm glad I went with my heart.

If you are going to use it a lot the shaft drive is a huge plus, as mentioned the gear indicator is a bit of a pain but you soon get used to it, to be honest there's that much torque if you stop in 2nd not first it'll still pull away easily enough anyway!

We had a WeeStrom and my son still has the BigStrom. We have a lot of members from the Strom community, including Dirt_Dad who already weighed in. A lot of us have gone from Strom to the Gen1 Tenere and now are on the Gen2 Tenere. That ought to say something.

The Tenere beats both Stroms for the touring and travel you said that you want the bike for. If you are sorta never going to leave the street, just put on a cheaper skid plate like SW-Motech to protect the vulnerable sump and a set of street tires when the OEM tires wear out.

btw - The Tenere is a great 2-up tourer, especially after you flatten the seats. There are threads about options on how to do it from $2 to the new seats costing big money.

I guess I'll use my trekker givi top case for this bike. I guess it will look OK. Got some old fares to sell from my Wee.

On my new 2017 it's was very difficult to get the owners manual in the supplied plastic pouch....that it

And that's how good my 2017 is

I'm ok with the looks. Obviously, not the most exciting color, but it will certainly work when I am on the bike... Lol. So the ride home was easy. It will take a while for me to get used to the power, the brakes and the gear indicator. I definitely felt like I was on top of the bike rather than in it. I am not sure about the seat... Seems odd... But it's a new bike to me. I need to adjust. Everything was an upgrade from my Wee.
