Re: problem shifting

New from the dealer?...Two weeks?...You obviously have a full warranty, so don't do anything, take it back to the dealer to have it inspected.

Re: problem shifting

Yep warranty, but you could slip off the shifter and put some grease on it.

Re: problem shifting

One common problem is a sticky shifter. The symptom is that when you push down with your foot to downshift, it will go down one gear but the shifter does not return, all the way, up to the middle position. Then it seems like it won't downshift again. It's just because the shifter never came back up far enough.

It's easy to solve out on the road with a bit of WD-40. Take a look at this thread and see if this helps:

Re: problem shifting

As somebody else wrote, common problem with a number of Yamahas, that has an easy answer, which is the subject of numerous previous threads.
Remove the shift lever,
clean it,
grease it,
put it back together.

Watch VERY closely for how a belleville spring washer is installed on the back side. It is easy to lose.

Re: problem shifting

Hi, new Xt1200 owner but long time lurker. I have a question relating to this 'issue', just bought a 2012 from a maindealer in the UK, have put about a 1000 miles on it, mostly motorway, but today, riding around locally, I found the shifting really hard going (will try the cleaning suggested) and while sitting in traffic with clutch pulled in and in 1st gear, I'll blip the throttle a little as idle seems low and the bike moves forward, as though clutch not engaging fully. I have owned countless bikes, the last a DL650 and VZ1600, both of which I still have, but have never experienced such bad shift (have owned many BM's too). To add to that I had an absolute shyte experience from the stealership.
Any help, guidence would be most welcome.

Does sound like you have excessive clutch drag; most bikes have a little, but hard shifting and "creep" with throttle at a stop are consistent with the problem. On a wet-clutch bike, the typical remedy is new clutch plates, but I'd see if the dealer is responsive on a bike just bought. Another thing to try is a change in oil brand/type and if you're at all close to a change, this is worth a try, although it probably won't make much difference. But maybe the PO threw something way off the mark in there.

Re: problem shifting

Thank for the info. Is there anything I can do? The dealer I bought from are unresponsive to say the least and as I'm now in Switzerland they are even more evasive, I may have to take it to my local Yam dealer, at least they are trustworthy.........

Also, try bleeding the clutch, just in case...

Do this first as it's most likely what the problem is.

Re: problem shifting

I had this problem recently I tend to flush my clutch every 3rd oil change and never had a problem until three days ago when I flushed my system.
I found that I had to set my clutch lever all the way when I would have it two to three clicks loose (Chinese Pazzo knock offs).
I felt the clutch disengaged to abruptly launching he bike and some feel of slipping I did remove all air in the lines as I always have and tightened the bleeder valve as I always have, it felt spongy.
I talked to my mechanic and he told me clamp down on the lever hold it and loosen the banjo bolt attached to the reservoir and bleed it at that location that air gets trapped in that location after time.
Then tighten it back up release the lever then top it off, he was correct it solved the problem.

My 2012 is doing EXACTLY this. Brakes have been bled 2x in the last 6 weeks with no remedy. Additionally, if you put the bike on the centerstand in neutral and start it, the back wheel does not turn. Put it in first and let the clutch out and the wheel spins at engine idle as you would expect. But then when you fully pull in the clutch lever, the wheel not only does not start to slow down, but it continues to spin under power such that I cannot even stop the wheel spin with my burly Sidi Adventure boots. In short… the clutch is not disengaging when you pull in the lever.

There is something more serious wrong than a dry shifter pivot or air in the clutch lines. I showed it to my service manager and he was baffled. I am trying to get it into the shop after work one day this week to let them look at it closer. Thank god I have the YES warranty.

Mine has done the same thing for three years when on the center stand.

Try bleeding the clutch, not the brakes :D :D :D

Ha!!! nice catch my fingers and brain were not communicating well. As you might expect, I meant clutch when referring to the bleed.
