The latest news for Scotland's road users is that the Highways Agency will now only fill pot holes that are 6cm or deeper (previously 4cm), anything less will be left........ When will first world countries stop acting like third world countries? A 6cm (2 1/4") deep pot holes if wide enough will ensure a motorcyclist is thrown into the road, but that's ok, as the HA will save tens of £1k's per year...

I despair for the future.

As I see, the first world countries dominance is slip sliding away. I see it in America to. The entire world is moving toward one-ness, mediocrity, the lowest common denominator, it the New World Order! Thanks in part to organizations like the EU, United Nations, etc... that seek to establish a standard for all nations and deny any nation a leadership role. Hell, our president travels the world apologizing to other world leaders because we are one of the worlds great nations.

Rant over and I'm going for a ride. Temp 76f now, the sun is shinning and no pot holes here, just too many snow bird..... argggg.

We better get used to pot holes and falling bridges cause the once affluent US of A has gone $19,000,000,000,000.00 past broke.

In the UK it's a two man job ............. at least.

One to measure the depth & one to spray paint the hole yellow, to identify it as a proper pothole, that satisfies local requirements.

Trouble is, the paint wears off pretty quick after a few HGV's have pounded there way through & we are back to square one before a repair can be undertaken. It's a self perpetuating operation that fritters money, rather than use a proper road surveyor to keep the infrastructure in respectable order.

Central Goverment talks of improving UK road communications, but progress is depressingly slow.

One 2 measure and one 2 mark, nothing get fixed..... sounds like a typical government approach.
Seems the labor of two could be better spent filling the pot hole regardless of the depth but that's just not the way government operates..

Indeed, especially here in the UK, for example:

Due to the complexity of tax law and complaints of giant companies / rich folk not paying any they had a brilliant idea and created "The Office For Tax Simplification".

These guys were tasked with simplifying the 20,000 pages (yes 20k pages) of tax law, their progress over the 5 years or so they have been simplifying tax law is that there are now 30,000 pages of tax law.

Repeat this for every single thing the government does, and then factor in the EU Bureautwats doing the same, and then add on the UN and all these other useless bunch off tosspots who make a great living out of drafting new red tape and it is not hard to see why the first world countries are all massively in debt, overspending and achieving nothing.

I bet they spend at least 5 times as much working out what pot holes to fill than they do actually filling the fu***ing things.

I expect the next logical step would be to pay one of the big IT consultancies a few billion quid to develop a computerised Pot Hole analysis program, this will go about 5 times over budget and not be finished by the time the government changes and the new government will then scrap it and start a different multi-billion pound pointless project in its place.

In the UK I have used a recent new site run by the Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) also with a good working smartphone app that lets you take an image and report the pothole which then gets sent to the HA in the relevant county. It works as a long pothole on a roundabout opposite my house got fixed in about 3-4 months from my report.

see here for info. http://www.fillthathole.org.uk/

On one of my many visits to the Pentagon I encountered an office named "Department of Redundancy Department". There were six Colonels sitting in there.

A satellite we need satellites to spot an monitor pot holes, given the longevity of the average pothole the satellites would also be able to measure the movement of tectonic plates.

The guys at our Hotel in Brno, CZ warned us about this scenario when we were there for the MotoGP a few years back. Heavy rain had overcome the drainage systems in places creating flooded areas, mainly at intersections - this, coupled with a spate of metal thefts left some dangerous hidden hazzards. Ok, probably not deep enough to park the bike in, but sufficient to wreck the bike & the touring holiday. The recommendation was to try to always follow the tracks of others, preferably locals, leaving a sensible distance to avoid ever needing to stop in the pooled water - pretty obvious after all.

We saw the same issue, but thankfully it revealed itself on a dry road, on our way through Prague too. The lesson there was never follow other vehicles too closely, to give yourself time to avoid the odd missing drain cover & some of their enormous pot holes. I have to say, after a huge detour due to floods/roadworks, it was a pleasure to reach the Fatherland & a superb stretch of de-restricted Autobahn on our way to the overnight in Dresden.
