Plastic cables for OEM boxes?

I'm looking to see if there is anyway to purchase those plastic cable thingies (stops) that prevent the tops of the luggage from opening to far? When I bought my 14ES with 5000 miles on it, one of the cables on the top box was already broken. Since then I've had one of them on the side box break too. They break at the eyelet.

I haven't been able to find a source for them yet. Hoping someone has a source or come up with something different. I'm thinking about trying to get some thin cable, piano wire etc and a couple of crimps to make the eyelets if I need to. Anyone else?

I would just fabricate some new limit straps from nylon cord or some such.

::025:: They're supposed to have limit straps? I don't think mine do. (bought used) I just open and load. I DO like that they open from the rear.

Your original thought to duplicate them with some thin gauge cable is a good one. My Touratech panniers use thin multi-strand cable. For the eyelets, if you can't find a dedicated cable crimp with eyelet at the local hardware store, just go the the automotive electrical section and use some crimp on connectors with the size eye you need. Wrap the cable around and thru the crimp area a couple of times for added strain relief and to add some bulk to crimp on. Should be very inexpensive and easy to make any length you want. The cable won't stretch like nylon cord will.

Most Ace Hardware stores will have everything you need. Lowes and Home Depot may too, but the smaller neighborhood places are more likely to keep the small gauge cable in spools that they can cut what ever length you need from. I'd make at least one spare while making up replacements for the broken ones, just because. Heck, if you have a spare, you'll never need it. :D

Continuing my thoughts on this subject, I don't really care for the OEM plastic straps anyway. In colder weather they are stiff and don't allow the lid to tip back far enough to stay open. Sometimes if I hold the lid open against the straps for a while they'll relax a bit, but I end up fighting with the lid falling closed when I'm trying to load the boxes as often as not. No bueno. They need to be longer, mounted differently or made of a material not affected by temperature. I'll put up with them until they start to break and will then look for a different material to replace them with.

I have had two sets of OEM side cases and found the lid did not lean enough to keep the lid open. You can simply relocate straps by using a sharp awl and screwdriver. If you break a strap you can use a zip-tie material for a temporary or permanent repair. I like the other suggestions for a permanent repair.

Thanks for all the replies. I went to Home Depot today and picked up some 1/16" braided cable along with Ferrule & Stop kits. I probably won't get to making them up until sometime next week. It's been like this for a while so I have some time I'm sure.
