I've not been on here for a while, I've been riding the bike. New December 2016 S10 ES, now done 20K miles. Absolutely loving the bike and got used to it's jurky low speed fueling. I ride all year round and meticulously wash it down after every winter ride. It gets wiped over and ACF50 plastered everywhere ready for the next ride. It was all looking good until a day ride last weekend. Mucky conditions and when i got home I noticed the rear rim had badly pitted. Are these wheels anodised or powder coated? It's strange it's just the rear and it's both sides of the rim. It's as if I've ridden through an acid bath. It's been serviced to schedule and no faults reported. Has anyone else had this?

Not 100% sure, but close...I think they are anodised.
Are you riding much on gravel? so it could be "punch" from small stone?

I only ride on the road. This is not a localised mark from a stone it's all the way around the rim on both sides.

And you are sure that it is not only on top of the anodised? Like paint on the rim.

As it is still within the warranty period and you have eliminated other possibilities from foreign material, go to the dealer and get them to place a warranty claim.

It’s definitely corrosion of the Ali that’s coming through the finish on the rim.
I will be having a chat with my local dealer to get it sorted. I’ve already made them aware of rust showing around one of the rubber bungs in the frame.

My dealer had promised me, that they will get it paint, IF they wil accept it as a warranty, when they have looked at it, and he said that he never have seen it before. ??

Mine has rust showing around that rubber bung. Am about to rub down and repainted. Will probably add a little grease or silicone to protect in future, as it seems to be a water trap.

That rust around the bung is exactly the same on mine and guess what? They’ve never seen it before. I’ve now put ACF50 in there.

As mentioned the last time rust near the rubber plugs came up, Rustoleum at your local Home Depot or Lowes has a metallic paint that is very close to our frame color, with a touch more gloss and the flakes are slightly bigger. It also is thicker and sticks better than what the factory uses.

If you use your S10 all year round in the UK (as I do) my personal opinion would be just ride it and enjoy. They all seem to rust there and several other places but every bike has its quirks eh? At least the S10 works and is simple to service etc. Mine has 106,000 on it and although the rust appeared very early on it never really got any worse. Sorry for any typos...my fat fingers on the phone

I got rust around the bung too. Sprayed some flat black paint and all is good, 2 years plus now. It was brand new and rust started developing about a couple of months after I got it.

My rims are black and appear to be E-Coated. I will look at my 2015 when I get home. There are some tell tales that will confirm one way or the other. Anodize is not done on ferrous substrates. Put a magnet to it. If it sticks it is steel and not anodized. From the picture of the rim it appears to have a "candied" blue finish? If so, that would be a 2-3 step coating process similar to the tank finish. Those coating systems are typically very brittle and will chip easily

I found the wheel specs for 2016 XTZE1200 and it calls out aluminum. Assuming it is anodized, Look for extended moist exposure to salt or an alkaline material (eg Potash) to weaken the finish and make it easily damaged. Look at the spokes. In the US they are Zinc Coated. If the same is the case in Europe, salt or alkaline damage will appear as "white rust" or a chalky white residue on the spokes. If that is the case and they will not warranty the finish, have the rim powder coated black (>75mu DFT) and respoke with SS spokes.

I will be interested to see what you find and how this plays out for you
