I just bought the PIAA horn from Amazon instead of from Yamaha. Can someone post either a picture or instructions on how to mount it? I have an idea but I'm not sure it's right.

I have it mounted horizontally (label down), facing out and using the same hole that the OEM horn was in (the extended tab off of the fork clamp/brace).

Thanks

I don't have any pictures of my install,

I removed the stock, squeak, horn and the twisted bracket holding it in place,
installed the Piaa horn with its flat bracket, so the horn is facing down, label forward

the main reason to face down is flying insects.....

as for the Piaa horn itself, mega loud, chased several lane changing cagers back over from hence they came, and its plug and play

hope that helps

Did you add a relay?

Thanks.

No need for a relay. It is plug and play. The existing circuit is plenty for this horn. It is very loud

The wife and I were running beside a train and he was blowing his horn for a cross road and I was blowing mine at the same time. I thought my wife was going to fall off the bike laughing because she could still hear our horn over his. ::025::

I haven't installed mine yet, but in looking at the included wring diagram, I see that they show a relay. If the resistance of this horn is less than the OEM, we could have a bit of a voltage drop and it wouldn't be as loud as it would be with full voltage. I have some extra relays, so I'll experiment before installing mine.

Thanks.

The horn is very loud without a relay. The current draw is more with this horn than stock but wire size, circuit protection is good and VD I would think should not be an issue. I have not tested the VD but feel it's not an issue with this bike's existing system.

The only issue I have with adding a energize relay to honk a horn is the relay is just another point of failure if not needed.

If you try a relay let us know if you get an increase in DB with a relay installed vs not.

If it's any louder with a relay I could start blowing trains off tracks. ;D

I was wondering about installing it this way, I just might try that.

Thanks

Thanks for the mounting tip, hoping to relocate it to avoid the bugs and water. I bought the Yamaha part number because I'm an electrical dummy and did not want to zap something trying to hook it up. So I went plug and play and instant LOUD ! No issues so far...

They both look like the one that Yamaha specs for the S10, 112db. I have the one I bought thru Yamaha that I can sell for a lot less, like $30. PM me if interested.

I purchased the PIAA 76501 500Hz Slim Line Sports Horn from Amazon. I removed the original bracket, directly mounted the PIAA (facing down) and removed the label. Works fine, definitely louder than stock.

I haven't decided between that and the Freeway Blaster yet. One has a higher dB rating, but I wonder if there's really much of a discernable difference.

Hi All,

Just to share, will be planning to install mine, but am using a Hella Supertone Twin Tone.

As per my minute electrical knowledge, its best to activate the horns via a relay. As this way, the bike's original circuitry will be protected from any power loss or surge.

My wiring will go as:

Batt(or Auxiliary power blocks) +ve > Fuse(10Amp) > Bosch relay(tab 30)
Existing Horn connectors from LHS switchgear > Bosch relay(tab 85 & 86)
Bosch relay(tab 87 & 87a) > Individual Horn's +ve
Individual Horn's -ve > Metal mounting slab for horn

Cheers!
Kev

I have the Low Tone (PN 72112). It sounds like a regular car horn and it’s no louder than any car horn I’ve ever heard. Better than the stocker, but it’s not the “attention getter” like it sounds like the piaa is from the previous posts. On the other hand, it was $15 at pepboyz.

pardon me, but wouldnt the way of the horn face be prone to rain flooding or insect storing inside the horn?

as mostly these snail type horns exterior are made of plastics, they dont tend to last for a long time, & if water gets in, the inards of the horns maybe affected and then defective.

Best position to place this type of horns is to face down the opening, if its at external of bike, but if it can be hidden underneath any covers, the opening maybe slightly face forward for better sound penetration.

my 0.01cents..

Cheers!
