I had this rear rack and Caribou case from my old F650 Dakar. Couple of trips to Lowe's and I got it mounted back up. I don't think it's real strong because it's relying on the stock rear rack. Should be okay for the street though, and I have a Wolfman duffle for off-road.

Pelican looks good. Which size? I have a 1500 and 1550 for my KLR.

How are you going to mount your Duffle. I have a larger wolfman duffle that I would like to use for longer trips though I also have a Cortech smaller duffle for lesser trips. Today I removed the rear seat and lowered the rear rack. The Cortech duffle will fit well and be secure in the trough.

The Wolfman worked okay on the stock plate but now I have this.

I think it's a 1550 but not sure. I seem to remember it being 25 liters.

I'm digging this up from the grave...

Any chance you could get some dimensions/pics of the mounting arrangement you used? I just got a Pelican 1550 and am looking to develop a way to mount it to the stock rack while possibly maintaining the ability to pop it off easily.

Check for posts by Z06 - he has done just that with a pelican - I could even sell you the CF piece to go with it ;-)
(changed my mind about using it with my Gobi)

Wow! I looked up what he had. Not quite what I was thinking. I got a 1550, which is much smaller than what Z06 used. I am hoping to use just the rear rack and maintain use of the passenger seat.

In the end, it did not work. The stress on the plastic rear rack caused it to shatter, which led me to the AltRider rack.

That's unfortunate. Where did the stock rack fail? Any pictures?

No, I don't have any pictures. It failed catastrophically, just shattered. I was able to mount the old Caribou luggage-rack plate to the top of the AltRider rack, with some spacers, and continued to use the case that way. I've since purchased a Givi tail case and the Givi mounting hardware from AltRider, which works great.

That is terrible.

Any chance you want to sell some parts of your old Pelican setup?

I've got to ask:

How did you bolt that Caribou case to the stock rack? It looks like you used the 4 holes in the rack from the factory. What did you do on the front holes? It doesn't look like there is much clearance to get a nut under there a wrench to access it from what I can see.

I am thinking about doing similar to what you did, but also picking up the 3 main support bolts. I think this might take a bunch of stress off the plastic rack. A cargo net is always in my kit, so if the box flies off one day I will just strap it back on the rear seat and re-think at that point.

I don't remember the rear two bolts. For the front bolts, I drilled holes in the two plastic toe-holds for the factory case. I cut some small sections of alum. stock and drilled and glued them to underside of the toe-holds. So the bolt came through the top plate, then 1/2" spacer, then through the two holes in the stock tail-rack plate, then through the top of the toe-holds, then through the alum. backing plates and then a nut and washer.

I think flexing at the trailing edge of the stock rack caused the failure.

Hopefully that helps.

I wonder if your rack was the original, weak one or the post-recall reenforced version. Good choice with the Alt Riider.

I was wondering the same thing. That is one of the reasons I was hoping to see pictures of the failure.

Um, there was a recall on the rack? Got a link or other details like VIN range? I must have been out riding and missed that one. The only recall I know of or was notified about was the O-ring on the fuel pump.

Yamaha Argentina made a recall about the rear rack for "First Edition" 2010. They change it for a new rack reinforced with steel at the midle.
See the picture, is poor quality, but I can´t find other picture. The left is the original, the right is the new, look at the center. May be newest S10 after "First Edition" have the new rack from factory
Again excuse me if I wrote bad, but I think you can understand the idea

To be clear, the rear stock top-rack plate shattered, the silver part on a blue bike. The plastic sub-structure that is used for the factory case is still okay.

That is good news. I'm going to look into attaching to the stock plastic then.

Ah, that makes more sense. I was beginning to think that one of the old support structures had somehow made its way back into the system. One more compelling reason for me to go with Altrider.
