Not many of those old boys around anymore. But it will always be worth remembering. 74 years now, I think. Anyway, let's not forget. Go hug a veteran today. And let's be careful out there. R ::020::

Agree! ::026::

The country today does not seem to have that spirit and drive like that generation. Even though it was a melting pot of cultures like today it is not about thanking, protecting or obeying the law towards the country that takes them in anymore.

As the youngest son of WWII Navy PT boat engineer that passed away three years ago, I always saw he never asked for anything he just served his country and worked hard and obeyed the law to provide for his family and achieved great things.
He was a first to be born in the United States from Italian immigrants and was driven by my Grand Parents to be an American first to become successful.
One thing I will always remember is that he was a wicked cook like my grandmother, make something out of nothing being he grew up during the depression my grand parents taught him that.

I know, I should have just stuck with Agree! ::009::

But I am passionate about my country and the ones who sacrificed so much for us and to all the Veterans of today.

God bless them all.

History repeats itself and we are just in different places in that cycle of history. Remember this:

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:

"From bondage to spiritual faith;
from spiritual faith to great courage;
from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance;
from abundance to selfishness;
from selfishness to apathy;
from apathy to dependence;
from dependency back again into bondage."

We WILL go through this too. I see only one way to stop it, but that will not happen.

So true!!

Keep the faith in a higher power that is pure and good and be an example of that as much as one can to the world.
And have an abundance of common sense.
911 was much like Pearl Harbor but you didn't see the flock fly to the calling on that one. Complacency to apathy.

You missed from spiritual faith to slavery or worse.

This was called The Fall of the Athenian Republic and while it makes a good sound bite, according to Snopes it is "Mostly False."

Sometimes it follows the claim that a "Law professor's analysis demonstrates that the results of the last presidential election correspond to a prediction about the downfall of democracy. " Check out the basis for how it started here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/ballot/athenian.asp
;)
And for those who've seen this pop up again and again, I found this humorous:

"The item cited above began circulating on the Internet since shortly after the 2000 U.S. presidential election, reappeared briefly after the 2004 presidential election, saw a strong resurgence in a modified form which replaced the names "Bush" and "Gore" with "McCain and "Obama" after the 2008 presidential election, and was circulated again after the 2012 election in a shortened version with the names "Obama" and Romney" replacing the original's "Bush" and "Gore."

Thank you, presidencies can often exchange names and their supposed followers or haters would not know the difference.

Setting the urban myths aside, it really was great to see the real guys still getting together 74 years later. Turns out that 38 of them so far have had their ashes interred at the USS Arizona memorial.

Maybe you should read that again. It mainly talks about who actually authored it or not, of which I didn't attribute.
The basis of thought is sound. Which is why the other quote about how we repeat history comes about.

I guess it depends on how you want to define what the basis is. While the root thought is about the number of years implied by the repeated Biblical theme of curses lasting to the third and fourth generations (60 years x 4 generations), there've been many nations and empires which have lasted longer than 200 years.

On a more humorous note and living in the DC area, my foreign-born ex used to joke about why we in the US split the modern history and the American history museums, because our country hasn't been around long enough yet to have "real" history. My answer was always maybe so, but it's history that we're proud of.

The quote was referring to 'DEMOCRACIES', not other forms of government.

If I remember correctly, early part of last century, the Army solider manual listed in the back, different forms of government, listing a 'democracy' as a bad form of government, seeing as the USA was a Republic. Then that changed some decades later saying a 'democracy' was a legitimate form of government. Now if you ask people today what we are, I'd bet you'd get a response of either one. :mad:

You can correct me on the specifics on this, as it was a long time ago I read that.
