PC8 Installation on 2014 Super Tenere

Hello all...I unbuttoned the ST today to start planning the installation of the PC8 fusebox. I was going to follow the ideas outlined in another thread on the forum, but when I opened up the fairing, I found that the place that others had installed the PC8 on older ST's was now filled up by the fuses for the cruise control and the stop lamp. I've attached a couple photos for reference. I do have the Eastern Beaver wiring harness designed for the ST.

Have any of you that have the 2014 ST installed a PC8? If so, where did you put it? I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel, so if someone here has already done a successful install, I'm happy to follow their lead.

If this was covered in another thread, apologies for the repeat. I did check the search engine, but the threads I found pertained to installing the PC8 in the above space.

On my 2013 I installed the PC8 under the seat, plan to do the same for my 2014. You will need to extend the Eastern Beaver harness if you want to place it under the seat, but that isn't too hard to do.

Do you recall how long the extensions were that you soldered onto the harness? And any chance you have a photo of your install?

Unfortunately, I didn't think of taking pictures until after I was done.

I cut the harness wire that contained the three wires that go to the PC8 and spliced in approximately 18" of wire using Posi Lock connectors and then wrapped it all up in electrical tape. I did not splice on the wire ends that connect to the PC8 until I had the wire routed the way I wanted it, then trimmed everything to the correct length and spliced in the connectors.

I mounted the harness relay pretty close to the battery and at that point had to fold the wires that go from the relay to the battery and zip tie them as they were actually too long, but I didn't feel like splicing them to shorten them.

I mounted the PC8 using heavy duty velcro that Eastern Beaver sells on their website (you can also use dual lock or similar) and that thing isn't going to move unless you really, really want it to, I actually had to use a screwdrive to pry that stuff apart.

Wire routing was pretty easy, there is quite a bit of space to run the wiring harness from the electrical compartment to the under seat area and the PC8 fits pretty well there.

Thanks Nick. I finally did find a thread that showed the PC8 installed under the seat the way you've described. It's tight in there, and makes me fondly remember all the room under the seat on my old V-Strom, but it looks workable enough. Did you have to cut any holes in the tray under the seat in order to route the incoming wires to the PC8?

No holes cut anywhere, there is enough room between the edge of the fuel tank and the plastic tray under the seat to push the wires through. I would suggest routing the wires before you attach the ends though as that will make it a bit easier.

I put mine under the seat too. I ordered the 54" harness and used the driving light connector as a trigger for the relay.

This does seem like the best way to go on the 2014. I don't see any place to move the cruise control and stop lamp fuse holders to make room for the PC8, so under the seat it's going to be. Wish I'd gone with the longer Eastern Beaver harness, but oh well; time to break out the Weller soldering iron.

Thanks to both of you.

If you don't want to solder, the Posi Lock's work really well and are very easy to use,

http://www.webbikeworld.com/Reviewed-motorcycle-products/posi-lock/

I spliced in 14AWG wire and used 6 of the Posi-Lock PL1416 connectors, there is also a water tight version called the Posi-Tite WT1416.

One tip, if you do use the Posi-Locks, offset your cuts of each of the 3 wires about an inch, makes it much easier to wrap everything up tight afterwards.

Hi Nick.
Hi Tom, I take it you already installed your harness. I just received mine last Saturday, haven't tooked at it yet. Were my specs essentially correct?

I actually prefer soldered joints, since they're less bulky when finished than Posi-locks or butt connectors. I do use mechanical connectors when I'm too close to other wiring that I don't want the heat to leach in to.

It came just a few days after ordering and I installed the next day. I got what you suggested, 54" with the same size battery wires and the male end of the connector (for the pin). I stuffed the relay and connector in behind the tool roll.

I bought the PC8 when it first became available with a ready-made harness for the S10. That harness connected as a through plug (for the tail lights?) that was located under the seat. Only after people suggested using the fog light relay did he switch the harness. You might give Eastern Beaver a call to discuss what's possible.

Maybe it's different on the earlier models, but I thought that plug under the seat on the 2014 was a diagnostic test plug, and isn't supposed to be used for the trigger on a relay. In any event, the actual wiring of the PC8 isn't an issue for me, as I've installed them before; the real dilemma was just finding a place to put the darn thing LOL. The ST definitely has the most wiring of any bike I've ever owned, all jammed into a really tight space.

The plug we're talking about is still the OEM driving light connector right by the battery. The only thing under the seat the fuse block.

He won't do any custom work, I already asked.
