Well, this will ruffle some feathers but here goes.

I hate liars and cheats and thieves. We all do some of this stuff big and small but I, personally, try my best not to. Makes me feel better and makes the world a better place.

When someone sells me something and I use PayPal as a payment, I don't like marking the payment as "gift" to avoid the fees. If the fees are too exorbitant I can send a check! PayPal offers a pretty good instant way of sending and receiving money and they deserve some payment for doing this.

On Stromtrooper.com, their Classified section has a Sticky at the top that says, "Do NOT sell something and use the PayPal GIFT option". Pretty classy. Honest. Raise your price, split the fee, eat the fee. Honest.

I think we should be as honest as VStrom riders here on YST.com.

Can we put a Sticky up that says the same thing as on Stromtrooper?

Not really ruffling my feathers per se, but I feel this is best negotiated between the buyer and seller not as a forum policy. When I list something for sale and agree to a transaction, I make it clear what I want net. Payment is usually via paypal or post office money order. Either the buyer can eat the fees for the money order, gross up the paypal to cover the fees or send the money via gift. No liars, thieves or cheats this way. I am pretty sure the buyer gives up some protection from reversing the charges when sending payment via paypal gift so the exposure to paypal as a company for disputed transactions is much less. Just my thoughts on the issue.

If you make a payment as gift, you lose all protection if the deal goes tits up.
Might be fine if its £20 to a mate, but different if its £200 to a stranger.

That's exactly right. Thus no exposure to PayPal for reversing a transaction.

You are lying to PayPal when you say it is a gift. You are cheating them as they do not receive their % for doing the deal.
Its still your call.. ;D

Paypal gets paid either way. If I send money as a gift, I pay the fee and if I send money for goods or services, the seller pays the fee.

Actually, they haven't had the Gift option for some time. There is now the option to send $ to friends or family. When doing that, Paypal says:

No fee if you use your PayPal balance or bank account for domestic transactions.
