If this doesn't work, the Mrs. says we are going to get a Goldwing.

Basically I bought an off the shelf Givi backrest, added a couple of studs (bolts) on the top box and took a piece of aluminum strap and made some keyholes in it to slip over the studs. All of this was necessary so that the backrest can be removed to open the top box.

Looks great. Are you happy that the top case and mount is sturdy enough to support your wife leaning back on it?
If he's lucky, she will have her bottom scooted back but will be leaning forward with her loving arms around him. >:D

That's what I am taking about ::003::

After a test run this weekend I found that I need to tighten the fit between the backrest and the studs on the top case as it pulled off when she shifted around. More fine tuning in progress.

I think the top case is plenty sturdy for this application.

I use a butt Gel pad up against mine. Need to find a better way of attaching rather than the straps. Stays in position and the Wife is very happy. No problem so far with her leaning back against it. Done trips with no issues and the bags full. Top box kept light mind.

Problem with the GIVI backrest (and most other makes including Honda) is that it is made of hard plastic. Better than the edge of the top box though. Our bike has a homemade (by the complainee) padded rest that takes the shocks out better. We have used this idea for the last 7 bikes and there has never been a problem with the carrier supporting the topbox. After all, there aint enough room to recline against it - its just a backrest.
