I searched all over for a clean looking answer to adding a passenger backrest to the Yammy top box to no avail. For anyone still looking, I found a way!

1. Buy the Yamaha passenger back pad for the Road Star Deluxe: Yamaha STR-5GA41-50-01 Backrest Pad for Yamaha Road Star Deluxe. This has 3 mounting holes in the back.
2. Create a template that matches the box size and mark the back pad hole locations.
3. Drill holes in the top box using the template.
4. Get big washers with holes that match the size of the bolts needed for the back pad.
5. Dope liberally with silicon to keep out water.
6. Screw that sucker tight.
