Panniers help required

Hi Folks

From my intro post, I'm planning on having my S10 arriving at the beginning of March.

I was going to buy a pannier frame, and top box + frame from Touratech, then use my existing 2006 Touratech Zega panniers.

Unfortunately Touratech UK want 50% more for the equipment than advertised on the Touratech Germany website. Touratech Germany won't sell me the gear because they have a UK distributer so I must buy from the UK!!
Essentially this equates to an extra £250 (or $376 US or 332 Euro depending on where you live)

With this in mind I'm thinking of not buying the Touratech gear just on general principle. I can accept increased delivery but 50% extra just because I'm in the UK is a bit of a swiz. Coincidentally I have also had a reasonable offer on Givi Trekker Outback panniers and top box which is only a relatively small amount more than buying the TTUK stuff.

So, my question is: Are Givi Trekker Outback any good??
As a pannier system goes I've read good reviews, the monokey system also sounds good.
BUT
Are they tough? The Touratech Zega panniers are renowned for being tough if you drop the bike (not that I'm intending to, but sh*t happens).

Any comments on the durability / crashability of the GIVI panniers, or Givi experience would be appreciated.

Thanks, Chris

I agree about TT UK trying to ream us up the arse. The only reason I have any of their kit is because the dealer I got the bike from gave me a good discount on it. :)

I have just bought the Outback top case and am really impressed with it. I like the look of the Outback panniers, but they are a bit wide on the left hand side. I am going for the Bumot panniers as they fit tighter to the bike. About £750 for the complete set. Also includes a nifty tool box.

Thanks for that guys. Currently considering TT racks and existing Zega panniers with Givi Outback top box. I recon my TT boxes 37/45l will be about the same width as two 38l Givi panniers (~970mm).

Anyone know if Givi locks will fit TT Zega cases?

Thanks, Chris

Zega Pros will mount up on Holan pannier racks - they use the same 18mm tubing diameter, and the pannier loops are the same size, so your cases would bolt right up. They make an asymmetrical pannier rack (similar to Touratech's) in either mild steel with black powdercoat or stainless steel with a bead-blast finish. I don't believe they have a UK distributor, but you can contact them directly at holan@holan.pl or via ttheir website at http://holan.pl.

Tell 'em Jason from ADV Motorrad sent ya. ;)

Jason, thanks for the tip.
Sent Holan an email. Had a look at the website and looks promising.

I was also recommended this
http://www.stahlkoffer.com/

The kit looks good (my friend loves his top box) but I've not yet figured if it will suit my existing equipment.

Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris - happy to help! If you're not married to your Zegas (or can resell them for a decent price), you might also want to check out BUMOT. They have a UK distributor - www.adventurebikeshop.co.uk - and are a great value for the money. They also beat Touratech, Jesse, and Stahlkoffer in a recent pannier shoot-out on Adventure Bike TV. ::008::

Whoops....yeah, the pannier shoot-out starts at roughly 41 minutes in. Usually I can trick YouTube into jumping ahead, but I must've lost my magic touch. That said, the guys at Adventure Bike TV do a great job, and they've got a bunch more episodes here.

Pay no attention to that uber-expensive panzerwagen - [handwave]...these are not the droids you are looking for...[/handwave] ::025::

Jason, thanks for the tip. Did a lot of thinking and have ordered the Bumot panniers including top case. Next step is sell the Zega's.
I now have the bike, its great, will post a picture soon.
Thanks again, Chris

Holan racks are superb and I had mine delivered from Poland in 4 days. I've got Ard cases which fit nice and tight on the bike and you'll be hard pressed to find anything comparibly priced or as tough.
