Hello brain trust. I'm likely to order a set of Bumot luggage this winter for my 2016 S10. I'm debating between the 40L/36L combo or 45L/41L combo. In discussion with advmotorrad, they indicate that the larger panniers will extend beyond my handlebars by about 3/4 of an inch on either side. To date, I've only ridden my WR250R with wolfman soft panniers, so don't really have a good sense of just how much bulk or risk factors the larger hard case panniers bring. My tendency is to go with the larger panniers to facilitate longer multi-day touring w/ camping gear, but I also know that I'll likely be commuting and grocery shopping and joy riding with these panniers in place. The added 10 liters is nothing to sneeze at when I'm trying to make sure the wife is able to be kept in comfort (she has her own bike, but no panniers for now). I also know that I can strap additional gear on top of the panniers or have a roll of stuff on the pillion. But I am still drawn to not going too small.
I see advice on the interweb about keeping panniers no wider than the handlebars. But how important is this and is 3/4 of an inch a big deal in terms of maneuvering or general safety? My sense is that it's not, but some folks seem pretty emphatic about it. I'm not lane splitting, but I am aware that emergency situations may require less than ideal space constraints.
Am I worrying over nothing?
