Opinion on deal for a 13 vs a new 15 ST

In short, near me, I've found a used (only 400 miles) 2013 White ST for an asking price of $8999 USD. I have 3 new Red 2015's to pick from at an asking price of $10,800 USD...but shipping, freight, etc will push them into the low 11's. Since I wouldn't pay asking price, let's just say 8,500 vs 10,900 out the door.

Cruise control, better windscreen, reduced handlebar vibration, nicer LCD, and smoother power delivery seem to the biggest differences that I see discussed on here.

Looks like Puig has a nice screen for ~$137 that folks on here seem happy with. I'd love to have CC, but would live without it and the gen1 LCD is fine. So that leaves power delivery and vibration. I haven't found a thread on if the 14-16 rubber mount can be added to the 12-13 bikes. I'm also not clear on if an ECU flash or something else helps with power delivery. I like white over red, but it's growing on me.

So, is 2,000-2,500 initial savings worth going with the 13? What would you do?

::004:: From Zurich. Gen 2 is a no brainer, and top yoke (triple tree) are different on Gen 2, Gen 1 is a 'all-in-one' unit so rubber mounts cannot be added, unless you replace the triple tree from a Gen 2 model.

I have a gen1. I put a 2014 clutch in and a manual cct and like it a lot ....now.

If I had the money, and knew then what I know now, I would go for the gen 2

If you're interested in a new bike and willing to fly/ride or drive in and haul back (like I did) there is a dealer in Shawnee Oklahoma who has 2 new 2015 ES's (one still in a crate) and he's asking 13.2K out the door. None of that shipping or freight or inventory tax or what ever else some dealers can think to toss in

You would just have to pay tax, title, license and what ever other fees your state might charge for an out of state vehicle purchase. In Texas it cost me another $900 when I got home with mine.

He also has a brand new 2013 on the floor with 0 miles and he's asking $8999 for it as well.

Here's a post I made on my very recent expereince with Sehorn Yamaha.

I really appreciate the feedback, thank you all!

Jer2675,
The ES is tempting, and I'm definitely open to travel for purchase, but I have to cap this motorcycle budget at some point. It started at 8 grand, and just keeps pushing higher :D

But the feedback so far really confirms what my gut tells me, that I'd likely be happy spending the extra money for the improvements that come in gen2. It's always great to hear credible opinions.

To me, the changes were worth a lot more than $3000. Don't forget that it is not lost money. The 15 will be worth more down the road as well.

Cruise Control
Heated Grips
Electronic Suspension
Larger windscreen
Adjustable windscreen
New winglets under windscreen
Revised Instruments that are configurable
Revised handlebar controls
Revised handlebar position
Revised body panel
Revised throttle cable position
Revised sidestand with larger footprint
Revised mirrors
Better power
Improved fuel mileage
Much SMOOTHER engine with less vibration
Revised fueling
Revised touring and sport modes
LED lights
Revised Exhaust
Better Sound
Substantially improved speedometer accuracy (now reads 1mph high versus previous 10% high)
GPS mounting bar

Just to play the devils advocate on this one...

2013 with $$ in pocket

Madstad bracket w/ GPS bar- $100 used
Instrument Cluster - I don't like digital tach on new one and it seems too large. Digital hard to read in some lighting.
Configurable Instrument panel - Who really constantly reconfigures all this trinkety stuff...I find a setting that works good and usually leave it.
Handlebars - Personal preference depending on stature...my 2013 bars are good for me.
Bar risers - needed on either new or old if standing for long imho (maybe not if you're short)
Updated Body Panel - meh
Large Sidestand footprint - $100 or less to fix
Mirrors - New ones are a bit better looking to me.
Power - Reflash levels playing field - $300 (not necessary, but if you're after the max power yes...power is good for me stock 99 % of the time)
Engine Vibes - My 2013 is pretty smooth to me, but an upgraded clutch basket might make it smoother - $300 + a bit of labour
LED Signals - I would like this on my 2013...might replace in the future.
Sound - I like the throaty sound of my 2013
Speedo Accuracy - Annoying a little, but I don't really care....keeps me from getting large speeding tickets.
GPS Bar - Comes with Madstad bracket
NO ES - Is a plus because I don't need the extra weight and cost to fix down the road.

I would say negotiate down the 2013 more and upgrade what doesn't work for your body/riding style. Put the left over $2500 into a retirement savings account/kids education fund....or fund a great trip on the new-old(er) bike.

I was in the same boat as the OP for about 6 months...going back and forth on which way to go.

Ultimately I stuck to the target budget I originally set for myself.

Patience prevailed and I found a pristine used 2013 that was partially farkled with items I already knew I wanted. Much of my rationale mirrors what our fellow inmate from up North has already conveyed in his post above.

I think target budget, what you will REALLY be using the bike for the majority of time AND what bike you are coming from are the biggest factors.

For example, two of my buddies went with FJRs and I instead went with a Versys back when we cancelled our original US bound S10 pre-orders. I am grinning ear to ear with my Gen 1 S10 right now since my last scoot was a Versys but I would sure bet my buddies would be happier with the Gen 2 since they both ran FJRs for awhile.

YMMV and good luck...no matter what you will have great scoot!!!

Budget is key. If you stay at $8000, I would suggest hanging in there as there are plenty of well farkled 2012 ,2013 bikes out there. You can find a bike with heated grips, 2014 clutch basket, upgraded cct , panniers, seat , adjustable windshield ,etc. With a few of those mods, they will ride as good as a 14 or 15 and sometimes faster. You would save a fortune and have an outstanding machine. If, however, you plan to spend more, then I'd say in for a penny in for a pound and get new.

This is a bullseye right here.

Unless you plan to keep the bike forever, and let's be honest, virtually no one does, even the ones that say they will.

So now down the line, how much more for the '15 will you get, and just as importantly how much easier will it be to sell a '15? My guess is significantly more.

I know you mentioned a budget, but in my view that entails more than just the purchase price.

I'd get the '15.

I would venture a guess that at least 9 out of 10 people that have owned BOTH Gen 1 and Gen 2 will tell you the same thing (including myself)....

"Go for the Gen 2!"

Personally I like used bikes. Depreciation is a real mood killer.
I got a great deal on my 2012 S10 it has pretty much all the farkles I would have put on it anyway. I could walk into my garage and light her on fire right now and not lose as much money as the previous owner did due to depreciation.

Getting new bike is cool but it is worth it to you. That is the question. All the issues of "smoothness" no cruise control are not really a big deal in my eyes. But I use to ride a KLR that was very rough.

Also besides finances how the bike makes you feel is important. If you get on the bike and feel like you should have spent the extra $$$ everytime you ride, well that isn't to cool. But if you look in your garage and think, damn that bike is dope, daily, then who care about the $$$.

I got a very nice deal on a used 13 but I sure wish it had cruise control

Do a search and you should be able to find threads from folks who added them to Gen1 bikes.

I went with a kaoko throttle lock...yes, I know it's not cruise control, but it works great and it's easy to compensate for hills. Gives the hand a rest when needed...Simple and effective.
I tried the o-ring setup, but it didn't work as well as I'd like
