The bike was revved to 4K as stated, that is about where emissions tests are done, so there is usually a bit of lean / timing trickery going on there, My Strom 1000 did the same thing, and there is a bit of an exposure thing with the camera going on as well. ::024::

Just running a small pedestal fan across the headers makes a BIG difference to that colour.

So Mark is right, and 528 is right as well. It just depends on how red and under what conditions.

I suggest everyone give it a try at least once. Makes you appreciate why headers turn blue.

if you ride in wet weather or offroad crap you'll find that one header gets protection form the front fender where the other does not, hence they are running at slightly different temps and this will cause discoloration differential between pipes.

Thats my thought and also backed up by the local Yam dealer.

I washed mine after a long ride last Sunday, let it idle back up to kick the fan in and dry the bike off. The phone rang and I got distracted and came back to glowing (as per Grahams photo) headers, everything else normal except they were distinctly blue on cool down. I had revved it a bit before the call and the temp was 98 deg on the gauge when I got back. No obvious harm done except the discolour. Scary sight and I am glad nothing combustible was close by. Not sure if they will scrub clean, will give it a go. The garage was dark with the door down and makes it very obvious. My first thought was why I havent started a grass fire before as I ride trails and have never given consderation to where I pull up.

I have to say, for what it's worth, that I like the look of the pipes blued or better said that it dosn't bother me. To me it looks like she has been ridden hard, a real fire breathing monster. (OK maybe that's a little much) It would be one of the last things I would spend any time on trying to put back to the way it was when I bought the bike. It does make sense, as "kas" said in his post, that one pipe is more exposed than the other and that is the way they are colored on my beautiful bike, burnt, blued and all.

I have about 1500 miles on this bike, and as you can see in the photo, the right manifold is getting very blue. Its actually darker then what the photo shows. Its getting real dark right at the flange, and on the pipe bend. The left pipe is barely colored at all. I've not seen this on my other bikes before.
The web is one big heap of conflicting, and mis-information. So I thought Id ask people who I know have the same bike as me, do others observe this same effect? Im going in to get it checked, but I'm curious if any of you see this on yours?

Thanks for any info
Brian
Ive got 2000 miles on mine same same. dealer told me it is because of the cross over pipe.

No offense Mark and I have no intention to start an argument about this, but I disagree with the statement that this is normal.
Maybe not normal on some bikes but quite common nonetheless. My WR250F did it and there were countless threads on Thumper talk forum crying "May Day" and it was pretty clear 100% of them did it.

I know this is old news now, but just wanted to say thanks to the forum. I was a bit concerned and the first thought was "I wonder if anyone else has seen this?" Well, again, this forum turns out to be a great resource.

This was the only bit of real wisdom I've read on this thread :) Nice.

Finally complained enough to my dealer about the uneven color and a pinging under hard acceleration.

The same service manager that told me the back cylinder always runs hotter, sent it to the shop and they found TB sync was way out of balance. My bike has 13k on it and I've been nagging them since my first 600 mile ride.

They tried to charge me for the balance, but I prevailed.

Now it smells like it's burning in the left pipe for the first time. I should check the plugs and see how lean the right side was running......

OK, I just gotta' know...

As we all know, the Super Tenere is a PARALLEL-twin. Which cylinder did that brilliant dealer say is the "back cylinder"? The left one or the right one? ;)

I think I'd be looking for a different dealer.

Thing is, we'd probably get along famously in person - I'm probably a younger version of you from the automotive world... I've hung out with Hurley Haywood, Ferdinand Piech, been on Disney rides with Johan de Nysschen, in VIP tents when Audi won ALMS championships, partied in Dr.Panoz at Cheateu Élan, ridden with his drivers around Road Atlanta, driven with his drivers around Road Atlanta, Roebling Road, etc...

I don't say all of this to brag, as most probably don't even know who these people are - just as perspective and a compare/contrast to our backgrounds.

And yeah, I can be, um...opinionated (some have said arrogant or cocky).

I'd likely sit and listen with great interest if you waxed about motorcycle racing history etc. - while I can drive a car with skill most will never posses, when it comes to motorcycles, I'm a serious (competent at best) wannabe...

Hey creggur, I have had the pleasure of sittin and mostly listening, :) , to Dallara and another racing fella. The stories are quite amazing. And it would sound like name dropping if you weren't there yourself to witness. It's just the world they come from. It's real as the one I came from.

My favorite story involved Kevin Schwantz, not at a track, but instead just hanging out with these fellas on the streets of New Braunfels. It was hilarious.

And your self described description tells me yaw would get along just fine.

Scary, ain't it?

Just for the record, the Schwantz story was on the streets of downtown Austin, at Ed's second store... And yeah, I'm sure ol' Creggur and I would have a lot of fun hangin' out and "bench racing"! ::008::

It's not what people accuse Dallara of (name-dropping) that bothers me - my little story was an (admittedly) pathetic attempt to express that - it's that he's NEVER wrong. Which, again, is my own character-flaw, (according to my wife, anyway) you see.

I'm a contrarian little shit by nature (again, according to my wife, mom, dad, friends, etc) but I'm never wrong (in my little world, anyway).

Wow - way too many parens in those two paragraphs - can you tell I've had a couple? Before long I'll be arguing with myself... :)

I'd love to sit with a nice Scotch and listen to Dallara and some buddies talk about racing motorcycles 'back in the day' - I'd be happy as a lark - I'm sure of it...

This has been an epic thread-hijack - back to whatever this thing was about originally... ;)
