IL, the land of straight, flat, boring roads
It was a dreary winter in the sleepy little Midwest town. All the roads were covered with snow and motorcycle riders were suffering from PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome). One rider had a particularly bad case of PMS, as his trusty bike was on the sales floor of the Pre Owned Department of the Yamaha dealer. It had been traded in on a new Super Tenere, but the Super Tenere would not be here for several months, not until May. Sure, the Yamaha dealer had a new Super Tenere on the floor for display, but this unit was not for demo rides, and besides, the roads were covered with snow.

Then, one Monday morning, the sun started to shine brightly, melting the snow on the roads and by afternoon the temperature was up to a balmy 35 degrees F. It was too much of a temptation for this rider and while the dealer's back was turned, the rider suddenly jumped on the display Super Tenere, started it and rode it out the door. The dealer shouted in disbelief as the rider blasted down the street, although even in his disbelief, the dealer had to admit that he had never seen such riding skill as was exhibited by this dastardly rider.

Fortunately for this dealer, the rider returned the Super Tenere later, perhaps because this model did not have the optional Yamaha heated grips and the rider forgot to bring his electricly heated jacket liner. As you can guess, the dealer gave this rider a piece of his mind and ordered him to ride the bike back into the showroom. He did obtain a couple of photographs of this scoundrel, however and if anybody can identify him, please contact Fred Z so that the proper authorities can be contacted.

Tell us all about it. Don't make my wait anouther minute.
Well, I, uh, I mean "this guy" said it was incredible. The engine sure has a distinctive rythym to it and one that I know that I will enjoy a lot. I have a 08 KLR650 single and a 1998 VTR1000 Super Hawk V twin and they each have a rhythm or cadence with subtle power pulses that I really enjoy. This engine seems to have a cadence that feels to me like a cross between those two sweet engines. It is deceptively fast, probably because of the linear power delivery. I (ok, I'll admit, it was me :) )had not gone very far when I had it in sixth gear and was looking at the tach to compare the RPM's with what I was feeling as far as feedback from the engine. I was in what felt like a nice slow comfortable cruise at 4,000 RPM and then was shocked when I looked at the speedo and saw 80 MPH. Incredible! This thing will be able to cruise at sporting highway speeds without breathing hard. I was at first in Touring mode and then made the switch on the fly to Sport. I was interested in trying this, as the owners manual says you have to come to a stop to do that. An obvious misprint in the manual. You have to stop to change traction control settings, but not the D mode settings.

Even in the 35 degree temperature I could tell that the OEM screen does a great job. The seat was very comfortable with its wide flat surface and the reach to the bars was just right for me. We had rotated them back just a bit when we had it on the floor this weekend and it felt just right while riding. The handling felt very good, although there were only a few sweeping curves on the road I was on and with the cold temp's, I did not want to push it. I did try some slow speed maneuvers in the parking lot when I got back and it handled that extremely well, much better balanced than my KLR. It actually felt like a smaller bike than my KLR, probably due to what felt like a smaller profile of the gas tank .

Continuing in another post. BTW, did you ever reply to a post using the "quote" feature and after typing a couple paragraphs find that the text kept creeping down as you type? Happens all the time for me, but doesn't happen if I start a new post.

Anyway, where was I? Getting back to the engine. This unit had over 900 miles on it, so I wasn't too worried about RPM's and inadvertantly at first, hit the rev limit. Once I realized what had happened, I did it again, just for drill. It is not a hard limit as some bikes, but seemed to come in softly just a little above redline. I have read that the traction control is just as soft when it intervenes. Even though I switched from TCS1 to TCS2 when I stopped to turn around, I didn't attempt to see how it worked. When I get my own, I will find out, but didn't want to take a chance on winter roads with Yamaha's bike.

So, after I could no longer tolerate the cold temperature without heated grips or heated clothing, I turned around and rode it back. I could only think of one negative about it. Now that I have ridden it, May will seem even farther away. :(

Thanks for the ride impressions. Just make me want to get mine even more! :'(

You don't look like you're vertically challenged on the S10. How tall are you?

That is great that you got to ride it. Now you have even more to dream about until they get here.

Fred,
Did you ride it with the seat in the high position or the low? If in the high, how did it feel? We are real close in height and inseam.

I had it in the low position. In looking at the pics, it looks like the high would be worth a try. My ST1300 has 3 positions for the seat and sometimes I had it in low and sometimes I had in medium. Medium was more comfortable for longer rides, but I felt more in control riding twisties with it in the low position. I'll have to experiment to see what works best with the S10.

Thanks, fredz43! If I have good posture (like my Mom and Dad taught me), the S10 should be a good fit, I'm 5'10", with a 30" inseam. Upright bars make a big difference. I went with a Sargent seat on my V Strom, because the stock seat didn't have a decent contour for me. I was a little bit short on the reach to the ground and I didn't want to drop it down on the suspension. Not a big deal with my DR 650, but on a heavier bike like the S10 (or V Strom), it would be.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure it was in the upper position when I rode one. I know I tried changing the position of the seat before I rode it, but don't remember for sure where I left it.

Jakeboy, You will be fine on the Tenere. You have an inch on me in height and it fit me better than my Strom. I felt comfortable with it in either seat position.

Thanks, SpeedStar! It's nice to know Yamaha has designed this bike to fit the average height rider. When I get it all loaded up for a long trip, it's going to have some weight on it. Being able to get the feet planted will make low/no speed maneuvering a lot easier. Nothing matches the feeling of dropping a bike in a Walgreens parking lot with a BMW GS rider looking on. Ask me how I know. ::)
