Hi guys
I am freaking out a little about what happened recently. I have had some issues with my bike since purchase, seeing as it wasn't that well maintained. That said, I have done a tremendous amount of maintenance and - regardless - I was always under the impression that the engine it self was impeccable, and at only 46 000 Km (30 000 miles) as such.
Ok, so I bought the bike at like 39 000 Km and now it's at 46. I did one oil change at 44 or 45 000; all was fine. I also installed a K&N filter. Been off road a lot since then, also in dusty places sometimes.
Now, about a month ago I went to the capital which is about a 9 hour ride. I left the bike there to install a new bash plate while I was doing some other stuff. I picked it up the day after, and after about 5 minutes of riding the oil lamp turns on. I stop and put it on the center stand, and I see the oil slowly coming into the window (this was at a mountain and it's a little cold, like 10 degrees Celcius). I thought it might just be cold and I kept riding a little longer until it got warm. The alarm really only turned on for 10 seconds and turned back off by itself.
However, this has never happened before. I stopped and bought some oil, and it took 200-250mL to fill the oil glass to upper limit. I kept riding the 9 hours back home, and I took it to the shop. My guy told me he doubted there was an issue since he knows the bike well by now, and suggested that we just monitor it. He also said that, if it was really consuming oil, then after 9 more hours of riding after filling it up, it should be a little lower again, but it wasn't. I don't know if this is true ornot if the damage is minor?
First oil change at 44k, none of this ever happened. ANd now just 2k after recent oil change and oil lamp goes off.
I might just be overly worrying about nothing but I've been reading about engine failures on the super tenere forum on facebook after using K&N filters, and I go off road quite a lot. The filter is fairly new though and it's definitely not dry. Regardless, we are still just talking about 2-3000 Km, or 2k miles.
We also had an issue with a fractured engine screw from the OEM bash plate, and a specialist at Honda was able to retrieve that, but they had to take off the bottom plate (I am not sure the english word, but they call it the "Carter" here in Colombia). I am hoping (but how realistic is it, IDK) that some oil came out that was forfeited when this job was done, as they presumably had to take the oil out and put it back in.
There's no oil leak as such other than mild humidity around the carter (lower engine plates).
Sorry for a messy post, I hope what I wrote here is enough to get some feedback on the likelihood of there actually being consumption or if it has another cause.
