My 2012 did not use oil for 50,000 miles then it started to use a lot of oil. At 52.200 miles I changed oil and filter and the next morning the CCT failed. During the inspection they discovered severe carbon build up in the cylinder. Enough build to prevent the valves from closing. The carbon had little to do with the CCT failure but did with using oil. During the discussion of the failure both Yamaha and a few members from this forum mentioned the use of Yamalube Ring Free Plus a fuel additive. One member posted photos and how well it cleaned (like new) the intake valves. With the thought of "if it cleaned the intake valves it cleaned the complete cylinder".

Do yourself a favor and try using Yamalube Ring Free Plus to see if it will make a difference.

Seems that excessive CBU is becoming a major issue in engine as manufactures push the boundaries of clean burn technology. I was considering purchasing my 1st diesel powered car but after reading of issue with CBU I took a pass.

The nearest gas station to me is a Chevron so I almost always run with it. Their Techron additive is suppose to be very effective at keeping the intake track clean and free of CBU. My friend, the guy considering the ST, is a former service manager for H-D and more recently at a Yamaha certified service Marina here in Florida. He's a big fan of Sea Foam and has witnessed it's effectiveness on marine engines. About twice a year I run it through all of my vehicles. It's probably similar to the Yamaha product.

Thanks for all your input guys! ::008::

I wonder if some people are reading there oil level wrong as the S10 is bugger to check .
True, when I bought my first S10 I nearly phoned the dealer the next morning telling him there were no oil in my S10, so I read the manual and were it correctly say that the engine mus be warm to check the engine oil.

I think most dont let the engine get warm enough and than think the oil level is low, then they top it up but actualy overfull it but due to the dry sump you wont know it.

Best time to check the engine oil level is after a ride, the S10 also have a low oil level warning light.

I always though run-in made a difference, always follow Mototune style run-in on the advice of a couple of tuners / engine specialists.

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Never had a new bike that used any oil, my S10 was an ex-demo with 149 miles on the clock - I would be very surprised if these were "by the book" miles, and that made me happy, I went about 5 miles to get the oil warm and then re-filled with new (not synthetic) oil and fitted a new filter and went back out to run it fairly hard.

I think oil consumption is likely to be affected by so many factors that figuring it out here, or getting an answer as t "does a Gen2 burn oil" - Even my Air Cooled GS was good on oil, yet everyone tells me they burn loads - but I could do a 3,000 mile trip between top-ups.

I was not (until now) aware that lean burn running affects carbon build up, and again does the type of use affect this greatly - especially as the bike is actually rich out of closed loop, so in theory anyone running an S10 hard and fast will be running rich not lean - but long stretches at cruising speeds will have the bike running lean for extended periods.

Makes me even happier I have ditched the Cats and had mine optimally re-mapped on the dyno including the closed loop area - assuming the carbon build up is down to the fuelling of course, but either way having the fuelling right is highly unlikely to make anything worse.

My 2012 will make oil disappear (burn?) when on extended highway trips. I went across the country from VA to CO and it used about a quart, but only when at interstate speeds. During the 750 miles in the mountains of CO, it used nothing. Really irritated me after the 1st long day of a long trip to find the oil low in the sight glass and to not have brought a spare quart. I have to say that the Tenere has "quirks" that some might call character, but I find very un-Japanese. My FZ-09 has many of the same quirks. There currently sit 2 brand new APE CCTs in my garage waiting for install.
