OEM Pannier LEFT side stay

Hey folks, I'm just curious if I'm guessing right. Is that hook looking thing at the bottom for securing helmets/jackets/etc.?

I too am curious as I'm not sure what its real purpose is either. I don't see one on the right side. It could simply be a general purpose bungee point or something. I was thinking about the helmet, but that could get a bit tedious if the bike is on the side stand. Enquiring minds want to know!

This has been a point of debate on the forum in different posts from time to time. I don't recall anyone ever coming up with an answer though.

I checked mine out and only the left one has it and it's fully enclosed so you can't slip something on there. I thought it was a mounting point for a strap but the right side doesn't have it. I guess you could use it as a helmet hook if you use a lock along with it.
