Yes, the narrowing due to the exhaust clearance issue is not as dramatic as the exterior of the bag might lead you to believe. The space inside is very usable and after using side-loaders on my FJR and BMWs, I'm now a big fan of top-loaders. With the liners, its very easy to pack and slip them in. I put street clothes in my left bag as they're more compressable and use the right bag for all the tools, spares, rain gear, emergency gear, etc.

Yamaha spent some time figuring how how to get the bag as tight to the bike as possible with the least amount of space loss due to the exhaust. Along with relatively light weight, it was a big reason I got the OEM bags. They're very well-engineered bags (except for the latches).
