Thought I would make a thread for the discussion of the OEM Luggage.

I purchased the OEM Side Cases to be used all the time. The side cases are mainly plastic with an aluminum skin for better looks. Mounted they are 34 3/4" wide. The mounting brackets are simple, sturdy, and don't standout when the luggage is removed. Yamaha did a good job designing them to fit and look good on the Super Tenere. The Super Tenere looks better with the side cases mounted. After riding with the side cases for a month I am pleased with their looks and function. They don't hold a huge load but they carry what I need daily and will carry all of my clothes, accessories, and tools while traveling. The side cases will also carry most of my food and cooking gear if needed. They are narrow enough for everyday use and will split lanes (in California) without concern. Are the cases worth the cost? Well I am cheap and think they should cost less but that is just me.

I do not have plans to purchase the Top Case though I can see it being useful.

I agree with you Tim. I have the side cases as well and they do everything I need them to do. no issues with them.

When I installed the side case locks I did not use Loctite on the retaining screws. After about 2,000 miles the retaining screws on the right side case loosened up and backed out. The good is the rubber seal caught them. The bad is if not caught soon enough you could lose the lock. Moral to the story is to use blue loctite or the like when installing the locks.

I have all three cases and have been very happy with them. I use them daily commuting and the locks seem to be better the more they are used.

I agree with everything Tim said. I got the factory side cases because I thought they looked the best and there’s no gawky brackets showing when the boxes are off. Install was a cinch. I use a Motocentric Mototrek Tail Bag instead of the top box. My dealer was kind enough to toss a $75 discount my way given that there are some below retail prices floating around on eBay, and I appreciate that, but I do feel that they’re overpriced.

Not sure I've seen a photo of the brackets in here. Here’s what they look like. Note the lower brackets that attach to the passenger pegs. You can barely see them.

My bike was one of the 'leftover' pdp bikes and came with the Adventure Pkg. I wasn't at first too wild about the cases, but I've grown to really like them. They're rugged enough for me, hold as much as I'd need (I've learned to pack lighter) and look pretty good. I usually ride without them though and when they're needed they mount in seconds!

They also sit high and back unlike my pelicans on my old KLR which would smack the back of your calfs if you wern't careful. I'll be sure to locktite those lock screws!

These are great bags let down by flimsy latches that put way too much pressure on a mission-critical and weak ignition key. I am VERY careful with my latches and they're doing Okay, but I'm worried about long-term durability. And the plastic screws holding the lid retaining straps are a joke.

One thing that makes the OEM bags work so well are the Yamaha liners. Definitely a must-have with the panniers.

I picked up the oem cases because they are light, sturdy, look good, fit well, and are keyed to match. I have all three.

I am considering selling them and getting something else because I find the latches and locks to be maddening, they are too small (and load restrictions are absurd) for me, weight is carried too high and too far back.

Latches: I think I need to lube the locks again, as they are getting stiff again, and cold weather does not seem to be helping at all. Got to pick up some graphite. But even when kept lubed and turning reasonably easy, I can't stand that the latches don't catch if the case is at all full... anything near the latch mechanism interferes with the spring..., that there is no latched but unlocked position (must lock to close), that if you overturn the key (that is hard to turn) you undo the mounting latch, that two handed operation is required for proper operation (open/close), and the key is stuck in the latch unless you return it to the closed position. All-in-all I find these latches maddening.

Size: I think they hold a bit less than 60 liters.... competitors mostly hold about 90 liters, or up from there. I am not able to fit my tripod or my helmet into any of the bags. I can readily fit two helmets or my tripod into my bmw topcase. The 11 lbs load for the top case is ridiculous. 22 lbs load for the side cases more reasonable, but still a little light.

Position: The bags sit too far back on the bike, nearly all the weight is past the rear axle, and the bags aren't as tall as competitors, meaning that heavy items in the bottom are carried higher, and overall load is higher.

Summary: They are fine for a hotel tour... I carry a cpap, a full first aid kit, a reasonable tool kit and dSLR camera gear in addition to the minimum necessities. I can manage that ok with the three bags. Adding camping gear to the mix has so far stymied me, even with two dry bags strapped to the passenger seat. For my intended use I think larger and better designed bags are needed.

Have you guys found a way to open the bags without having to use the key, that is what I didn't care for, I wanted to come to a stop, turn around and open the bag to pull something out and then continue on my way, all without getting off the bike.

There's no standard way - obviously you can make extra keys and just leave them in the lock, but this carries inadvertent unlatch risk and working the key while seated on the bike is going to be difficult and carries risk of breaking a key. Actually getting to stuff in a front-hinged, top-loading pannier while seated is probably not a picnic.

What you're asking for is something the engineers specifically try and avoid supporting for safety reasons.

Might I suggest a tank bag?

I got em. Locks are crap but have yet to let me down. They seem to hold everything I drag along camping. Look great! Price was good with dealer discount. Lockset screws keep working loose, didn't want to use loctite there but looks like i will have too.

You guys that are complaining about the locks/latch mechanism -- you are holding the case lid down while you turn the key right? If not, you're not doin' it right and yep, you could bend a key. I hold the lid down without even having to think about it now. Have no problem whatsoever with the lock/latch design, but that's just me. ^-^

As stated in my prior post... I don't like that it takes two hands to operate properly.... i.e. yes... :) I think most folk here have seen the video.

But now the mechanism is stiff again even if the lid is up, and I am just turning the lock so I can get the key out. Two or three weeks ago I was on your side and said to one of the EU members that if he was stressing the key he was doing something wrong.... now I feel, as usual, like a dunce for that comment.

Okay, fair enough -- I wasn't really trying to give anyone a hard time, just thought there might be some people out there who were unaware of holding the lid down while you turn the key. Hopefully mine don't stiffen up like yours have. I did notice a few instances right after I had installed the lock barrels that they were pretty stiff, and I just backed off the pressure and returned the key to the center and tried again, which worked. Anyways, I do like these bags overall and don't regret my purchase.
