some people say that the OEM keys are "soft"and bend easy but My locksmith told me what He knows is aftermarket blanks are the identical composition with a brass core and nickle coated external surface. The reason they bend is the length and large plastic knob allow you to turn it quite hard and produce more torque than a shorter key with a smaller handle. I got a couple extras cut for the new bike anyways.

I was at an ACE Hardware store making a couple of extra keys for my tenere. I purchased a couple of the long blanks and had them cut 2. As he was cutting, he mentioned that he had a shorter Yamaha key, so I said cut me one of those to see if it works. It was only a couple of bucks and worth a try - The shorter key opened my seat lock, but didn't work in my ignition. I can't remember if it opened my oem cases or not.

so just beware that the shorter key may not work in some of the key holes.

I had two short keys made specifically for my seat and pannier locks. I had to straighten my long OEM key.

short keys to not work in an ignition is pretty common motorcycle stuff. the shorter ones work in alot of the other holes.

I have been using a short Kawasaki key that my locksmith noticed would work. I prefer it over the stock Yamaha's. Does not bend in ignition or locks.
