All,
I might need to contact Yamaha, but wondered if any of you might know...

I have a 2015 non ES bike that is US specs, but is with my in Europe.

I am wondering if the OEM heated grips sold in Europe would be fine to connect to my bike, just as those sold in the US (same ones?)

The parts number for the grips sold in the US and Europe are different....but then I looked at the parts number for other OEM items such as the tall wind screen, engine crash bars, side cases, and top box, and all of those parts numbers are different as well....

Therefore my only concern is the electrical aspect and interface of the grips to the battery and computer...thoughts?

I would order from the US, but they won't ship to my European address...

Thanks.

Not to get off the specific subject but I find the OEM heated grips to be very inconsistent and usually inadequate in colder temps. As nice as it is to have control of them through the display I wouldn't have done it had I known how inadequate they were going to be. You would be better off splicing a set of Oxford Premium grips in and not worrying about part numbers. My 2 cents.

Interesting. Have you gone into the settings menu to make sure that you are getting 100% on high and the desired level on the other two settings? They work very well for me on my 14.

Me too.. I have 3 squiggly lines set to 10 in my settings and unless it's really cold out or I'm wet and cold, that setting is normally too hot for me.

I can't think of any reason the assemblies would be different for europe vs us spec. I believe it's a fairly easy install though I haven't done it myself. I find the settings on my 2016 work well for the chilly northeast so far. I contemplated adjusting the settings but I think they're fine where they are.

In my experience, the OEM heated grips on the FJR and Tenere perform VERY well. But, as Fred mentioned, you do need to program them to your taste. That said, I have a set of Oxfords on my Wee and I think they are even better than the Yamaha OEM heated grips.

Just to stay off the original subject, I'll throw in my two cents...

I found out on my last trip (2300 mi) just how much the warmth felt from a heated grip can vary. I have Oxford's on my non ES 2014 because they were already installed when I got the bike. I was contemplating swapping them out with OEM for the convenience of the integrated dash readout, and, I really didn't think they worked that well, but in the end I kept them. The point of my post, is just like tire life and MPG, a lot of the deviation of how well a grip heater works is riding style. The majority of my riding in cold weather in the past has been on interstates at speeds of 65 - 80 mph. At these speeds, at least for me, the heaters don't even feel like they are working. However, during my recent riding at the Romney get together, since the majority of the ride time was cold and wet, I had the heaters on. Since a lot of it was much slower going than interstate travel, the grips got so hot, I had to turn them down a number of times. So, this is just a FYI, that it might not be the heaters, but how and where you ride, that makes them feel better for some than others.

In conjunction with the grip heaters, I use handle bar mittens, hands are always toasty on the low setting ::015:: ::021::

I have them on max, "3 bars" almost exclusively during the colder days (40f or lower) and you can put you bare hand on them after even a short ride, also I have to let them heat up completely before I go out on those aforementioned cold days or they never really work at all. Maybe the ground is weak or there is some sort of issue, but they definitely would only get 1 out of 5 stars if I had to rate them.

I have had a very, very similar experience with the OEM setup.

Yes, but did you program the "3 bars" to be maximum (10) heat?????? If it is set at anything other than 10, you are not getting the maximum heat the system is designed to offer.

I have the OEM on my '14. They work EXTREMELY well- better than those I've had in the past- even at 80 mph!~

One thing I can think of for the OP is that I believe the plug on the US bike is a Ford spec plug. The European product may be identical- except for the plug- just speculating.

One question- I've thought of upgrading my bars, but I used grip glue when I installed the heaters and I don't think I can remove them without damage. My question is whether I could splice a set of foil generic grip heaters to the OEM cables and still get the dashboard control of the settings? Resistance difference going to render them unusable- or just affect the temp??? Anybody done it?

It's been reported in other threads that the OEM grip heaters are unusually low resistance compared to most aftermarket elements. This would mean anemic heat if you used high-resistance aftermarket elements when the system was expecting low resistance OEM elements. Having said this, most report the factory system can get VERY hot, so perhaps there is enough headroom in the system to handle it if cranked up the dash to higher settings.

Love my OEM on my 15 non es, my three settings are 4/7/10 and in the high 30'F temps I keep cycling between 2-3, three does get too hot to hold barehanded. Highway speed does matter but not for my palms.

I'm thinking of getting a pair of OEM heaters too found 'me pretty cheap... I also noticed several posters chasing a PDF of the installation instructions but can't find anything -- anyone know where the might be found?

Hey thanks Bryce, that was mighty kind of ya!

::008::

I see there's more to it then just the grips with a new piece for the throttle -- which makes it look like I may not have found as good a deal as I'd thought by ordering just the left and right grips from one of the parts distributors...
