I bought an FJ09 (#18 mind you) right off the showroom floor when my KLR died. Well, I had hoped it would have been something I could take off road, but it wasnt. A torn out drain plug later, I found out the hard way.

So, my original plan was to swap for a DL1000, but yalls advice told me that was dumb. After a few days, my friend at the dealer calls me and tells me he has a trade incoming that I would like, and described to me my dream bike.

I ended up doing a straight swap for a 2012 Super Tenere w/28k miles, owned by a service manager at another bike shop, and farkled. I mean, givi side bags and top mount, altrider skid plate, kickstand thing and crash bars, rox risers, kao cruise control, weird floaty foot pegs, and some more i cant recall at the moment.

I think I did good, and can get back out in the shit!

Any advice, tips or tricks for me?

Add gas and occasionally text the wife you think about her?
;)

Welcome to the group, congrats on the deal, and it looks well set up. How many miles does your new ride have?

The search engine for this forum works pretty well and the model is actually 5 years old, so you ought to find it easy to search and find answers for whatever specific questions you come up with.

And when people ask what it is, you can tell them either that it's a Super Tennis Shoe (as in comfy) or it's a BMW Recovery Vehicle.

currently theres just under 28k on the clock. services were done like it was the POs religion.

My only concerns at this point is sluggish starting, a loud tapping noise right at startup (goes away after a few revolutions) and occasionally, if you "pop" the throttle the bike wants to diesel but then kicks right up.

I already know I need better lighting. and I think the PO did something funky with the bars, theyre kinda turned down and the start button, you have to push up to hit it almost.

Welcome from metro Seattle default and congrats on the new [to you] Tenere!

With this description, the FIRST thing I'd do is a valve clearance check [and if needed, adjust] and replace the CCT.

Good luck!

That noise is the Cam Chain Tensioner (CCT). Do yourself a favor and replace the CCT with the improved 2014-15 CCT. Do you have an extended warranty? Others are are changing to a manual CCT.

Kind of early for the cam chain clatter, but you described it perfectly, it needs to be addressed. Those are the oem pegs, the rubber 'floaty' part can be removed.

The cam chain dealio (I like it :) ) is currently "all the rage" around here.

You see, for the first 3 years history of this amazing bike (in the USA), there was nothing, I mean NOTHING serious for us to be concerned with around here.
So we complained of loose spokes, recalled headlight harness, and the occasional "hard start" (flooding issue).
This forum attracts Super Tenere owners from ALL over the world and we literally went YEARS without a serious or catastrophic issue popping up.

But finally, some of the bikes are starting to get higher mileage on them and we suddenly had a couple of them suffer catastrophic failure, that is caused by a faulty cam chain delieo.

Nothing for you to panic about. I promise. But if I were you, I WOULD get educated and then decide what to do to address your startup noise. Again, no panic, at 28,000.......but no reason to ignore it either.

Your choices are:
1. Wait until it gets worse
2. Put a new and improved 2014 model cam chain delio in it
3. Put an aftermarket manual cam chain tensioner in it.

You ought a used vehicle and expected nothing to need repair or replacement?

Fortunately, this is cheap and not hard. First off, if the rattling goes away quickly then it isn't a problem.

If the rattling continues you don't even need to drain the engine oil, just the tensioner and side case seal. Do a search on the words "Cam chain tensioner" for the procedure and photos. You should find 30 existing threads.

fwiw, I installed the new 2014 version and when I'm in there again will probably go with the manual CCT. It's just simple as a brick.

Hello and welcome aboard! For the most part, you have a well sorted machine that may need a CCT replacement within the next 20K miles. As as been said here already. do a search for CCT, and you'll find plenty of information about replacing it.

I noticed in this and the other thread, no one has answered your question about lights. The stock lamp is an H7 single element. The "high" beams are actually a servo controlled shutter that cuts of part of the beam for lows, and opens up for highs. For additional lighting, you have lots of options, including a factory PIAA kit, along with any of the LED lights available across the internet that fit your budget and aesthetic sense. On my bike, I wrote up the install here.

Ask away, but keep in mind most of the questions you could think of have most likely been asked and answered, so the search is your friend. If you have any trouble with the board itself, Checkswrecks and myself are the active moderators, and we'll be happy to help.

that was an amazingly helpful reply, about the shutter. I knew it had projectors, but what I couldnt figure was how the H7 bulbs were working in this as hi/lo. got it now.

My only other question about the headlights, are what is the general consensus on LED headlight bulbs? especially in the projectors. Id love to be able to run them even if I have to make some adjustments to the cover on the back, but if they arent worth the money then meh. Ive also considered HID, but the only experience I had was on the KLR and they were less than stellar.

I just seaerched 'LED Headlights' and there is a ton of information and opinions. Give them a read to see what the forum opinion is.

Yep, that's the noise I went after with a new cam chain tensioner, but I was just over 40,000 miles. I wound up with a manual Ebay tensioner. Tabasco here has a line on the Graves brand tensioners for a few dollars more. Graves manages the oil passageways nicely, the Ebay one doesn't. Not sure if our lower rev-ing bikes need to manage the oil flow there or not like the R1's, but it's nice that they do.
