Hello and Greetings,
Six weeks ago I picked up my brand new '18 Super Tenere and although the weather wasn't been very cooperative I've managed to put 1,400 km on the odometer.
My last two scooters have been massive road sofas that weighed in excess of 800 lbs.(Goldwing and Star Venture) mainly to appease the little woman who demanded a certain level of comfort.
You just never know what kind of challenge life will throw in your direction and it threw an impossible curve ball at us. In December, '17, she received a devastating diagnosis of advanced pancreatic cancer and in two months she was gone.
She asked that I scatter her ashes in British Columbia where we raised our family. She will be taking her last, and longest bike trip in September.

I am very happy with the S10. So different from what I've owned before, she feels light and nimble and so well balanced. Next year I will put some knobbies on her and explore the back roads and trails of the Cape Breton Highlands.
I have been shopping for accessories and have already received the factory top box and lower wind deflectors, HeliBar risers and a Givi tank bag. Still waiting for a Madstad windscreen and bracket. I would like some advice on selecting a GPS and mount. The motorcycle specific units are very expensive compared to automotive versions. Do I really need to spend $600 vs $200?

Anyways, I'm out the door now to meet up with some guys and to put on some miles. This one is a food run, breakfast, ride, butter tarts, ride, lunch, ride....LOL
Peace, love, understanding,
JamesGang

Welcome to the forum. Condolences on your loss, good on you keeping your head up and riding on.

I use a Garmin dezl 760 truck unit in a RAM cradle mounted to a SWMotech bracket that sandwiches at the windscreen mounts. A little duct tape and it's been fine behind the windscreen for 50k miles or so. I toss a plastic bag over it if I'm heading into heavy rain.

The current dezl 770 or 2797 are good picks.

Let me know if you want more info.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Yes please, I would very much like more ideas and tips on selecting and mounting a GPS.

We did about 600 km to today and about 3,000 calories,HA!
I am blessed with world class riding right in my back yard.

Refurb 2797 7" display GPS for $199 - https://www.gpsnation.com/refurbished-garmin-nuvi-2797lmt-gps.html

Detailed info on weatherizing and other mods by Greg Rice for the 2797 and info on the dezl 770 too, (way more detail there than you may want to know) - http://www.gregrice.com/2012v2/2797/garmin2797.html

I have a 2797 for the car that I like a lot. I use a Garmin dezl 760 trucking unit on the Super Ten, it has an audio out headphone jack. The 2797 does not. The current dezl 770 unit will BlueTooth connect to Sena and other motorcycle headphones/comm systems. The 760 will only BT pair to trucking type headphones. I use a small dongle transmitter to BT connect to the Sena 20S I use for comm to talk to the wife. The Dongle is generic, but if you go that route, be aware that most BT dongles are receivers, not transmitters. You need a transmitter to get audio from the GPS to the Sena.

I'm currently using the Ram locking cradle for the dezl 760, which also fits the nuvi 2797. (It "locks" by having the face screwed on with 4 screws, not with a key mechanism.) - LINK

Ram offers a similar item for the dezl 770 now - LINK

Either cradle can be attached to a variety of mount systems to be used on the Super Tenere. I am currently using the SWMotech Quick Release one - LINK

My bike, the item to the right is a voltage meter.

I have since raised it up slightly to allow me to see my turn signals better.

Ram offers many parts to allow handle bar mounting, stem mounting, brake reservoir mounting, etc.

I like the big 7" screen units and am a more visual guy when it comes to GPS info, seldom using the audio unless I'm in a busy inner city and feel the need. The 770 is a bit thicker than the 760, so may limit windscreen angle on a Gen II or Gen I with a MadStad adjuster when using the SWMotech mount system. If you prefer a 5" screen or smaller, then it may not matter. FWIW, I ride a Gen II now, but had a Gen I for several years and swapped my Gen I screen over to the Gen II bike w/o the adjuster system, which I felt contributed to buffeting. The Gen II bikes with or w/o the MadStad unit have a cross bar that can be used for a GPS, but benefits from stabilizer bars, which another forum member sells here.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask specific questions if you have them. Or start a new thread for that, or search for existing threads and ask questions there too.

Sorry to hear for your loss.

Welcome to the club. Planning on visiting the island this summer, have they finally finished road construction?

Welcome, and so sorry for your loss.

You live in a great area. At some point and time we will be heading back up there again.

Enjoy the new ride.

Again, thank you all for the kind words of condolences.

Big thank you to EricV for the ideas and links.

To regder, I wonder if they will ever be finished construction. I have been told that there will again be some major projects on the Cabot Trail this year. I'll try and get more details for you.

Later...

Condolences. Sad but good on you for carrying on.

You'll love riding the trail on this bike. As you know, lots of places to go and some of the best roads in the province.
